Bompay, Aug. 25—11 p. m.—The latest despatches received from the front indicate that the situation on the frontier is getting worse. It is evident that the Indian government must face @ grave crisis, in- volving heavy expenditures and probably great lo-s of life. The government is {| confronted with the fullowing state of affairs :— Ky ber Pass has fallen into the handa of the Afridis; the posts in Kurran valley are threatened by the powerful tribe of the Orakzais; the Mohammedan tribesmen are meditating a renewal of hostilities around Fort Bbadabakar, while thousands of troops are engagel in crushing the revolt in the Swat Vasey, and two large brigades are holding the Tochi Valley, where the Maveudf-Maziris are again hostile. Fort Jamrud is held by a strong force of British and native troops, and ihe Brit- ish frout extends about 35 miles from Soabkadar along the vorth side of the Cabul river and sor. tiwards to Peshawur, where the troops are massing as the Bazoa demonstration against O akzais, who occupy the region south of the Afridis, but have not yet assumed the belligerent pro- portions of their northern neighbors. There is arising, however, of small parties which is proving troublesome near Kobat, and it ie expected that both tribes will try to close the Kohat pass. Numbers of tribesmen are mcving up toward Khyber from Kohat and that district is making the salt tariff tbe pretext for hostilities. The wildest excitement prevails among the Hindoo tradere at Bann, on Kurram | river. It is rumored that 7,000 intend to | swoop down on that place tonight, sack | the town end massacre the inhabitants. | i THE SO0STON STEAMER The Halifax arrived from Boston about seven o'clock last evening with a good | freight and the following passengers: D M | Chambers and party, Geo Wallace a: d| party, Jos E Stransa, E G Sanford, Miss | Sanford, Miss Agnes Duffey, Miss Marv | Dufley, Mss Smith Bailey, Mr Clark ard | wife, Mr K Buffington, Miss Ackermar, | Miss Edwards, Wm J Grumbic and wife, G@ H_- Bain and sister, Mr Hunt and wife and Miss Hunt, E 8S Rowell, H J Hunitull, Mrs Mooney.Miss L Fogarty, D E Delavan, Mr Jewett,F A Post and friend, Miss J Stewart,Mary McDovald, L Upton, wife aod four children, Rev Father Renard, Rev Father Fox, Mrs Costteburg, Mr AS Kewitt.
