During May the forecast indicates that the wind will blow one-half of the month from the north-east and the rest from the south south west. A large volume of water flows into the Bay of Biscay from the gulf stream, and it flows out again, some by the way of Brest and some by way ot Cape Finisterre. During the past five years there were 176 vessels of the British merchant marine wrecked on the north coast of Spain and Portugal. Much of this loss may have been caused by too much reliance on the force and direction of the currents as shown on the chart. The direction and force of the wind must always be considered with reference to all the currents of the North Atlantic. << + Ig Don't Stuff a Cold. If you do you will, nine times in ten, have a fever to starve. A cold is a shock received by the myriad nerves that bristle near the surface of s human body. This shock is transmitted to the nerve centres, and then back tothe mucous membranes, forcing a great amount of blood to those rmeembranes, creating a more or less severe irritation, and consequent rise in the tem- perature, followed by chills. Excess of food in the stomach still more increases the temperature ; and, worst of all, helps clog the secretions or natural outleta of the body. Itis high time we broke away from an old notion which, like some others, bas done more harm than good. For example, in years past how many poor fever sufferers, burning with an interoal fire and thirst, were hurried to sn untimely grave because not allowed eooling drinks or a bit of ice by the old time treatment for fevers, as foolish as the adage for fools, At Jast one cunning delirious patient got to a ae 7 cold water and drank his A; termined not to leave until the =a ran dry, he elacked the fever, re covered, and doctors learned a lesson. Experimenting with a severe cold is a dangerous custom, as most persons try one reme edy only until some friend suggests an- other ‘sure cure,” as Mark Twain so humor- ously describes. When slight hoarseness or tightening of the nasal membranes warns one of a skin exposure or chill from wet, act promptiy; a delay is dangerous. With chil- dren it may mean croup and strangulation; with adults, catarrh, bronvhitis, perhaps pneumonia, If neglected, nothing can pre- vent the sneezing, red nose and woe begone look of a person with a cold. Scores of moth- ers would as soon go to bed without matches in the house as without that old-fashioned remedy, Johnson’s Anodyne Liuimenut, near at hand for croupy children. Used with a miid laxative, as described in a pamphlet which L. 8S. Johnson & Co., Boston, Mass., will send free to anyone. Johnson's Liniment will cure a cold fer adults quicker than any known remedy. A mild, nutritious diet, a gentle physic to open the secretions, and a bottle of that old Anodyne from your drug- gist, will conquer any cold. Jobnson’s Ano- dyne Lioimentwas originated by an old fam- ly physician more than seventy years ago. m8 d6i wii ee Birren By A DoG.--A young brother of Mr. Peter McNaughton, proprietor of the Park Hotel, was badly bitten on the arm by a yesterdey morning by a dog which had been tied in the stable by acountry. London waa the scene of an unusual demonstration on Wednesday last, Eight hundred brokers, headed by leaders bear- ing the Union Jack flag and wearing Union Jacks of paper in their hats, in token of Exchange to a Unionists’ meeting in Guildhall. Upon reaching Guildhall and before entering, the brokers sang the anthem ‘Rule Brittania,” and cheered loudly for the union, for Lord Salisbury and other Unionist leaders. A crowd assembled evidently not in sympathy with the brokers, and lent variety to the cheers by occasional hoots. The Guildhall was thronged with unionists. As Lord Mayor K.nill, the Right Hen. DR, JANEWAY'S ADVICE KESPECTING THE COM- ING OF CHOLERA, In speaking of the likelihood of cholera gaining a foothold in America this year, Dr. Janway of New York tersely advises every- body to be prepared for the worst. This may seem at the first glance the talk of an alarmist, but it is in reality sound advice, There is no cause for panic, but a systematic preparation in view ot a possible epidemic of cholera is really essential, Quarartine regulations need to be obaérved. The work of the scavenger should extend to every hole and corner of cities and towns. An uncontaminated water supply is essential. The matter of sewerage is important. Sut there is yet another and also very important consideration. It is an undisputed fact that disease of any kind, and especially such a plague as cholera, will foster most quickly, and with the most deadly effect, upon an already diseased or debilitated system. It therefore becomes the duty of every person to as far as possible secure himself or herselt from its ravages, by confronting the dreaded enemy with astrong and healthy physical system. (Comparatively few persons find themselves in that eondition at this seeson of the year. The vast majority, indeed it may said that all persons, find it necessary to fortify themselves by the use of some remedial agency to restore lost vigor and vitality and so be literally prepared for the worst. The grateful testimony of thousands has established beyond dispute that uo more effective combination for this purpose is offered to the public than Hawkers nerve and stomach tonic and Hawker’s liver pills ‘Lhese are standard remedies, the formulas of which are endorsed by leadiag phyeicians on both sides of the berder; and they present to everyone at moderate cost the most ‘flizient means of regaining perfect heajth They revitalize the blood, stimulate the dix gestive organs to regular and petfect ection, restore to the nerves that force and strength which they have lost, snd remove from the system all traces and effects of debility.
