GENTLEMEN ; A party, consisting of ten, in the House of Assembly, —seven of whom either voted against me at the hustings, 1n May last, or used their influence to prevent my return—having declar- ed my s , ps2 caegiiitt my right to sit therein, either on ac- count of the majority of votes polled by me at that time (in May last), or in virtue of my former indenture, and a Writ having been issued for the election of a member in my place ; still entertaining the highest regard for the honour you have, on former occasions, confer- r2d upon me—deeply grateful for the confidence you have reposed in me—and justly anxious to vindicate my public character from the as- persions of your enemies and mine, not only before you, but before the country at large, I have again to appeal to you for an expression of your opinion upon my public conduct. With reference to the proceedings of this upright snd unprejudiced party—as they have affected, and do affect me, as your late repre- sentative, and you, as my late constituents—it is enough, at present, for me to remind you of the fact, that their proceedings are foreign to the practice of the Mother Country (which, however, they always profess themselves most desirous to copy), are unauthorized by any Sta- tute Law of this Island, and unsanctioned by ‘any precedent in its history. Had this party succeeded in making me their tool, as they hoped to do, you would, I am cer- tain, have been spared the additional burden which will be cast upon you by the ensuing election. But what then would have deen my position and reward? By a free-will act of my own, having exchanged the condition of a freeman, for that of a slave, I should have been sensible of little besides my own degradation, and have experienced nothing but constant mortification, arising from a secret conviction of my own unworthiness, manifested by my abuse of the confidence you had reposed IN ME : |said First District of Queen’s County having been declared for, as the tool of that party, the duty assigned me ‘o perform would have been to uphold the old Family Compact Party, the monopolizers of all public offices, and the blind folding, MES-| The First Electoral District of Queen’s County comprises merizing leaders of every Governor, since the time of Governor Smith, up to the last two years of the administration of Sir Henry Vere Huntley. When I look back to the election last May, and call to mind the vulgar and abusive inso- lence of that party who sought to crush you and me to the earth, and, in fact, every man who dared to oppose their assumption of dictatorial power ; and when, at the same time, I, with’ pride and pleasure, recollect the calm and Solicitor Generals, declared my seat in the Assembly manly forbearance with which alone you en- countered their systematic provocations, refus- ing—even whilst maintaining the most undaunt- ed front—to allow a single blow to be struck ; I cannot but anticipate, in the event of a contest, a repetition of the same brutal and scandalous conduct, at the ensuing election, on the part ‘ : a pales _|confide your interests to my care, I shall endeavour to of our opponents; but this anticipation, ac |prove myself worthy of your confidence, by promoting companied, as it is, by the strongest dependence. upon your zeal and firmness—not checked, but rether strengthened, by the constant exercise of prudence and moderation—causes in me no fear for the result; since, gentlemen, I know, you will remember that by the number of votes, | and not by the number or force of blows the election must be decided. | Conscious that I have not, at any time, be-' trayed the trust you have reposed in my inde-. pendence and integrity ; and fully persuaded) that you and [I have an identity of interests, which will always be best guarded and pro- moted by my preservation of these qualities pours eat in the Assembly vacant, refusing to! For what may be the character of my future public conduct, I, therefore, think I may confidently and proudly refer you to the past, Allow me, then, gentlemen, in conclusion, to observe that as, if any change has taken place in me, I venture to flatter myself it is for the beiter; so, on meeting you at the hustings, I am bold to hope that if you do not receive me tust as formerly, the difference will be found to exist only in the increased zeal and determi- gation, with which I shall find you prepared to support me. HEREAS one of my servants returning peacably home from my Farm on foot, on Saturday even- ing last, the 19th iast., shortly before ten o’clock, was met by several men going from Charlottetown, in three or four sleighs, in one of which was a woman, and without having given the least provocation, was knocked down and beaten by several of the men with sticks.
