The magnificent receptions given to Henry M Stanley, the African explorer, in Europe have revived interest in African exploration adventure, says the New York Press. A story about the German boers who have gone into the Transvaal was late- ly repeated as having been told by 8S. G. Woodford, who is the English state engin- eer in that region. ‘The boers are said to be a magnificent race physically, averaging thirty five to fifty pounds more in weight thin their Dutch an? German ancesters. The women are equally large with the men and the race is prolificia a high degree. Families average from fourteen to twenty children, and it is frequently the case that men wil! bave more children than they can remember. Mr. Woodford was in a country store one day where a fine looking old boer of perhaps 60 years had stopped to gat some articles of neccessity.
