Rewemser Madame Cora’s entertainment in aid of the New Hospital to night. — Tue steamer “ Hadji’’ arrived yesterday evening from Montreal with a cargo of mer- chandise. ———_-- Caoworp Ovur.—Oar aticle anent the Provincial Exhibition is crowded out of : ing’s issue. this morning ti sind Bong anp Gypsum Mitt.—Messrs. Hynd- man Bros’. Bone and Gypsum Mill will be in full operation at noon to-day. To those who take an interest in the advancement of agriculture the preparation of this valu- able fertilizer will be pleasing, th 090 GeoRGETOWN Feary.—There is, we learn, much discontent in Georgetown on account of the removal cf the Steam ferry boat. Georgetown has been shamefully treated in respect to ferriage. Do not fail to attend the performance in aid of the New Hospital, in the Market Hall this evening. The programme pre~« sented will be Madame UCora’s best effort, while the object of the entertainment ehould commend itself to all our citizens. _——-_ ~~. aap eo - -—--—- Taz Cunarp Line.—Orders have been given for the construction of several new for the opinions or slatements of spondents, Corre« To the Editor of the Daily Examiner : Dear Sit,—I entirely agree with your observations as to the manner in which the Exhibition at Georgetown was conducted and arranged. Allow me now to give some suggestions to the men in authority, who- ever they are, as to the Horticulture and l'loriculture; for those are my chief ins terest, that takes the prize in our Exhibitions, is that which has the longest bleched stalk. This is certainly wrong. All people who love this vegetable know that the part nearest ihe root is the most crisp and most delioately flavoured; and this is the reason that the ‘ Boston Market” is almost uni- versally preferred in the United States. It grows short and very thick at the root. Yet, such celery as this would have no chance at our shows. Secondly, the squashes that take the prizes here, are the largest and heaviest, and they are the ‘ Mammouth’’—the ‘* Mammoth Chile” or the ‘‘ Chile. These -quashes are never used for the table. No One cowld eat them, unless very hungry. They are grown in the States entirely for stock. The proper squash for the table are divided into two varities; the early and the late, or winter keeping, Perbaps, of ‘ll the early sorts, the “early summer bush crookneck’ should have;the first place, and of the late, the “ Boston Marrow” and ‘*Cubbard.” Weshould have three prizes instead of one for squashes : first, for the early summer sort, the best winter keep= ng, and the large sorts for cattle. Third, the -‘ Parsnips.” The long, nar- row, clean parsnip should take the prize, not the great thick thing that is only fit for the pigs. ‘Fourth, beets should be black and clean. with smal! taper roots, not large. [ will content myself with these four different sorts of vegetables, as they are the ones in which our Judges are the most ikely to go wrong with. In fact, the main thing is to have good Judges. At the last show I noticed. for one example, that a large Pumpkin took the prize for best squash, and a large yellow squash took the prize for best pumpkin. No doubt this was only a slip upon the part of the Judges; but still more discouraging for hose who take an interest in their gardens. As to the flowers, the difficulty of obtain- ing good judges is still greater. Such « thing as good flowers is hardly known in P. E. Island. In fact they are only grown by a very few, tow disheartning then it must be for the owner of a uet of flow. jersat the “show,"’ to be called upon by the Judges themselves tosay whether a steamships forthe Cunard Line. Perhaps the judges will built for the Cunard Service.—Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, Sept. 12, ee Mr. McKenzie boasts that the Maritime Provinces will go with him almost toa man, or a member, at the coming election. And by the way of enforcement to Mr. McKenzie’s declaration, Mr. Cartwright is going about telling the people of Ontario that Nova Scotia got more than she had a: right to in 1869; that the New Brunswick subsidy of $150,000 was an outrage; and that the financial terms with Prince Ed- ward Island were ruinous to the Dominion. Mr. Cartwright’s eminently frank states ments are acurious commentary on Mr, McKenzie’s boasts.—Hz. Cantello, a son of the then proprietor, nearly three-quarters of a century ago; and since then continued—with a few years intermission—up to the present time—some of the pupils being the best educated and wealthy members of the community, and from some of whom letters have recently been received by the present teacher, ac- knowledging the advantage of the instruc- tion they received, which enabled them to make themselves sociable and enjoy society in far foreign lands.
