NEWS BY Special dispatch te Exammer. LONDON, Jan. 26. John Bright, in a speech at Birming ham, on Saturday, suggested that Parlia ment should appoint a Commission to go to Dublin with power to sell the farms of landiords to tenants willing to buy them, and to advance three-fourths of the pur- ehase money—the principal and interest to be paid in 35 years. Such a measure, Mir. Bright believed, would meet the wants and satisfy the desires of the Irish. A Dublin despatch to the Globe says it is now generally believed that the Govern- ment intend to proceed at once with the prosecution of Davitt, Daly, Killen and Brennan, for sedition. The Pall Mall Gazette says that the trial of the sedition cases will not take place before the beginning of February. Orrawa, Jan. 26. Mr. Lowe, Secretary for the Department of Agriculture, has arrived from Great Britain ; he had been attending the meet- ings held by the farmer delegates. The ramored resignation of the Hon. R D. Wilmot as President of the Senate and a member of the Government, is confirmed. It is rumored that political differences exist between him and the Government. . <+-<e-r Local and @Gther Items. the Capes crossed both rge mailis on its way to Tur Couriers a ways to-day. Tobe opened by Mr. John Law- son. Ww. Brown, JunN., Secretary. We are happy to learn that our young friend, Ernest Dawson, Esqy., son of the Mayor of the city, to whom we made refereace some time ago as having successfully gone through the necessary examination for entrance into the East Indian Civil Service, is new at his appointment at Shealpur, in India, superintending the erec- tion of water works, witi a detachment of five hundred men under his control. And so our young fellows, all over the world, are able to make their mark, and take positions in the front rank of honor and of skill. A Queer Heap PanrrymMan.—The Jesse Hoyt, afamous New York steamboat, used to have for head pantryman a bent and crippled darkey, whose face was as full of humor as his form was of kinks and knobs. His name was Robert Smith, and his malady was chronic rheumatism. He tried Giles’ Liniment Lodide Ammonia for s week of the present winter, and next winter intends to astonish his old acquaintances on the Hoyt by his appearance as asound man, ‘tiles’ Pills cure Erysipelas. It is said that their usual supply of blankets, provisions, etc., are not forth- coming, and that great distress prevails among them in consequence. The Patriot also finds fault with the present Commis- sioner, or “‘ resident teacher.” It will be re- membered that the Mackenzie Government dismissed Mr. Theophilus Stewart from his position as Indian Commissioner, and appoint- ed inhis stealthe present incumbent. Of the present Commissioner’s fitness for the sition we kuow very little, except what we earn from the Patrict. But Mr. Stew art was a man wio had made the wants and habits of the Indians a study. He devoted all his time and energies to locking after them, and endeavoring to improve their con- dition socially and intellectually. During the time he held office, little or no complaint was ever heard against him; but he was dismissed from his position by the late Government, te make room for a political faverite wnom the Pairiet now insinuates is unfit for the posi- tion. As we before stated, we know very little about the vorapetency of the present Indian Commissioner, but when the organ of the party which placed him in power is the first to find fault, it looks as if there was something wrong. —Progress. a Supreme Court. Greenlees Brothers, at Gresham- buildings, London, and have selected from the vats, samples of their Lorne Highland Whis- key, and have subjected. them to careful ex- amination and analysis. The samples were pale, showing their freedom from added color- ing matter, very fragrant, mellow and of pleasant flavor ; in fact, they possessed all the characteristics of pure and well-matured Scotch Whiskey of the first qualtiy.” ArTHUR Hint, Hassatyt, M.
