The twelfth annual sesoion of the Sum- mer School of Scieuce is now in progress at Moncton. N B. Tke opening meeting was held in the Opera Hon-e, oa Thursday the 7th inet. Addres:es of welcome were given by Mayor Cole, D Grant, Esq, Chairman of School Board, Mr Robinson, M P P,and Dr McCully, to which replies were giveu by Dr Inch, Superintendent of Ediacation for New Brunswick, Dr Mac~ Kay, Superiniendent of Education for Nova Scotia, and Dr Bailey of the Univer- sity of New Brunswick. The addresses ! were interspersed with music both voca! and instrumental. (io Friday morsing alarge number of students enrolled and regular classwork was begun. Friday evenings Round Table Talk was an extremely interesting one,con- ducted by that noted patura'ist and scholar Dr MecKay superintendent of edu:a 02 for Nova Scotia. It is an inspiration not soon lost to come into personal contact with so entnusiastic and yet practicala man. The doctor’s theme wa: the development ofthe industrial idea in our schools. While ac~ knowledging that the tendency of the education of today was to draw people to the towns and into what is callec the learn~ ed professions he thought a sentiment might be created and an educstion provid- ed that would regard farmiog, mining, etc, as learned professions, and those engaging in such would come to be regarded as occupying an exalted and desir able position in life. A most animated discussion followed, in which it was evident that, so far as the teachers who attend the Summer Scbool of Science are concerned, they not only will, but already do, use theirendeavors to combat that tendency which causes their pupils to look away trom farm and factory to find an easier way of mak ing a living. Saturday evening wes spent with the microscope. There were a number of miscroscope under the raanagement of Mr. Scott, electrician of the I. C. R, whose instruments and collection of microscopic subjects are not surpassed in Canada. Wonders from every department of nature were exhibited. Beginning with the lowest forms of plant and animal! lire the develop- mentof both were traced through their various stages unti] specimens of the or- ganisms of the highest forms of life in voth the s1imal and vegetable kingdom were reached. With cach succeeding session of the Summer Schoo! of Science the interest and profit increase. From this benefit the teachersof P. E. Island are practically cut offby the action or rather inaction of the Government.Supported as the school 1s by the governments of New Brunewick and Nova Scotia, and being denied support by P. K. Island, the board of management | would not be justified in hold ing meetings | in P. K. island until such support is accorded the school. was beld in Ch’town and largely attended by teachers, a few of whom have since attended the meetings held in the neigh- boring provinces. The meeting could easily have been se- cured for P. E. Island for 1899 were it not for the attitade of our Government to- wards it. A large grant has not been asked for. A grant of $108 anvually or even $50 would secure for the teachers of the Province the boon of occasional meet- iags cf the Summer Schoo) in their midet. Nova Scotia, in addition to the money gramt to the school, recognizes the work done by the school in grantiog their Norma! Schoo] diplomas, and gives their teachers who attend additional holidays for that purpose. New Bruaswick, in addition to the money grant, I~ considering the matter of additional holidays and other recognition of the school, and the prospect of gaining these concessions are encouraging. From P.E. Island the schoo] gets no recognition whatever. This is certainly impolitic were it only for the bad light in which we are made to appear in the other provinces. No one today denies the utility of the study of the natural sciences and the province that does the most to en~ courage itwill take the foremost place educ:‘ionally. J.D.8. SHIP NEWS.
