Hundreds ot iarrners 'go to Charlottetown in sum ner only when necessity compels them, ii they can get what they want elsewhere, they do so, rather than visit meeting autos recklessly driven fin our rnr~ row country roads. Few _country women have the nerve to drive them- aelves to the Cit.y~ as they used to do. Asa consequence Charlottetown suilers. In the lterest of the City common sense would seem to indi- cate action along the line oi Mr. Weeks' suggestion-a $250.00 tax. But what about our Legislature? are our Representatives blind to the iact that the farmer and his family are being driven oi! the roads he is compelled to constructond keep iD repair? Good legislation means the greatest good to the greatest num- ber. That is, that the right oi the great majority oi our people to use our roads in safety and comiort must not be sscrlticed to gratify the whim oi some hull dozen individuals. To safe guard the rights ol the men they represent our Legislators should impose a license lee ot at least $800 upon each and every person running an auto in P.E.I. It may be objected that tourists them and we may suller it the tax is prohibitivef O`n the contrasy I be- lieve if we are true to ourselves, one of the greatest attractions of P.E.I. for the health and pleasure seekers will be, the quiet, restful enjoyment oi its highways, uncursed by the menace of the automobile. The present session of our Legisla- ture is the time lor action, and the larmer’s iriend in Parliament better get busy if he wishes to sustain his reputation. C. W. C. Bonshnw, Fehy. 24th ‘08.
