Before the Leaves Fall. | wonder if oak and maple, Willow and elm and all, Are stirred at heart by the coming Of the day their leaves must fall? Do they think of the yellow w irlwind, Or know of the crimson spray lhat shall be when chill November Bears all their leaves away ? Perhaps beside the water The willow be ids, sorene i As when her young leaves listened fn a mist of golden green; But the brave old oak is flushing To « Wine-rei dark and deep, And maple and elm are biushing rhe blush of a child aslee p- | “If die we must,”’ the leaflets Seem one by one to say, ‘*We shall wear the color of gladness i Until we pass away. No eye shall see us falter; And before we lay it down We ll wear, in the sigh’ of all the earth, The year's most kindly crown.” i So trees of the stately forest, And trees by the trodden way, You are kindling into glory This soft autamnal day; | And we who gaze remember j Chat more than all they lost, To hearts and trecs tozether } May come through the ripenin, frost. the Work Young Giris Might Do. I wish it were in my power to per- éuade young girls who wonder what they shall do to earn their living, that it ie really better to choose some busi-| ness thatisin the line»fa woman's natural work. There is a great repug- pance at the thought of being a servant buta girl is noless aservant to the man that owns a shop, where she stands all day behind the counter than she is where she waits upon the table or cooks the dinner in a pleasant house ; and there would not be a minu- te’s question between the two ways of going out toservice. The wages are better, the home is better, the fredom and liberty are double in one what they are in theother. If, instead of the sham service that is given by ignorant and really overpaid servants to-day, sensible girls who are auxiousto be taking care of themselves and earning good wages, would fit themselves at the cooking schools, any way they found available they would not long wait fer employment and would be valued im- mense'y by their employers. When one realizes how hard it is to find good women for every kind of work in our houses, and what prices many rich people are more than willing to pay if they can be well suited, it isa wonder more girls are notready toseize the chances. It is because such work has been almost always so carelessly and badly done, that it has fallen into dis- repute, and thedoersof it have taken such low rank. Nobody takes the trouble to fit herself properly, but women trust to being taught, and find- ing out their duties after they assume such positions, not before— Sara O. Jewett, in Boston Congregationalist. - ee The Right Moment. ‘“* Who grasps the moment as it flies, he is the real man.” There is a good deai of food for thoughtin this sentence for every wife and mother who reads this column. Tg grasp the right mo~ ment in our lives is of so much worth to us; to enjoy the prattle of our chil- dren even in the midst of daily anxieties andall the hurry of a busy life; to take the time tosmile and answer with the kindest words the friends who sometimes inierrupt our work, and, as we are apt to sey, wastes our day. How much better to do this now rather than to cry out in later year for the im- possible; to say, “Oh, for one hour with my little chiidren!” when they have become men and women, and are beyond our reach, and we are left re- membering the many hours in which we were not patient with their li'tle hindering ways, and in which we did not grasp the possibilities of happiness, Then, in very homely ways, to gras the flying moments is profitable; to| care for ail the material interests of the | household when they should be cared for ; to putupthe ripe fruit before it has time to soften ; to mend the little holes in stockings, the rips in gloves. If women who have work to do would not waste time in useless fretting about the unchangezble nature of their work, they would gain in time and strength. —wN. Y. Post. ~~. Old clothes have always been regard— ed as excellent vehicles of disease, and row new clothes are considered as dangerous sources of contagion. The reason assigned is the fact that new clothes are ordinarily made by the tailors and dress-makers who give out work to poor families, and that textile fabrics of all kinds absorb the germs of diseases which ordinarily prevail in tenement homes. The only way of escape from all these dangers is to quit wearing clothes, - 0a...
