WW. gf ns UNL HANGING 1,000 FEET ABOVE TUE AR-| enn | | rcp KANSAS RAPIDS— HIS UAIR TURNING WHITE. a { i / ine he Denvei Times. j Charles May and his brother Robert, | in the spring of 1870, offered to pass 60,000 railroad ties down the Arkansas from the mountaia source. He ‘Our offer was accepted, wheo we start- ed into the upper entrance of the canon with a large skiff provided with six days’ provisions and 200 feet of rope, with which by taking a running turn around some firmly planted object, we eould lower our boat 100 fect at a time. Ta this way at the end of three days haviag set adrift many hundred ties we reached the entrance to Royal Gorge. Here we discovered that av attempt to descend the first watertall with two in a boat was certain destruction, and to return was impoxsible. Accordingly I determined to lower my brother dowa the fall in the bout, « distance of 200 feet, bim the rope and let him take the chance of the canon (life seemed more certain in that direction}, while I would risk my physical ability to climb the canon wall which was about 2,000 feet high. ‘About 10 o’clock in the morning, I shook hands with my brother, lowered him in the boat safely at the foot of. the fall, gave kim the rope ana saw him no more, ‘ben throwing aside my coat, hat and boats, and stripping the socks from my feet, | commenced my climbing away, often reachiog the height of two haadred feet only to be compelied to return to try LL1ve some other way. At length, about 4} o’clock in the afteruoon, L reached a height upon the smooth canon wall of about oae thousand feet. Here my far- ther progress was arrested by a shelving ledge of rock that jatted out from the canoa side a foot or more. ‘T'o advance was without hope; to return certaia death. Reaching upward and outward, I grasped the rim of the ledge and then with the other, my feet slipped from the smvuoth side of the canon, and my body hung suspended in the air a thousand feet about the roaring waters of the Arkansus. “ At that moment I looked downward to measure the distance I would have to tall when the strength of my arms gave out. <A stinging sensation crept through my hair as my eye caught the strong root ot a ecdar Lush that projected out over the ledge, a little beyond my reach. My grasp upon the rim of the ledge was fast yielding to the weight of my person. Then I determined to make my best effort to raise my body and throw it sideways to- wards the root so as to bring it within my grasp. At the moment of commenc- ing the effort Isaw my mother’s face as she leaned out over the ledge, reached down her hand and eaught me by the hair, Stranger, my mother died while yet» young woman, when! and my brother were small boys, but I »:emember her face. 1 was successful in making the side leap of my arms, whea | drew my- self upon the ledge and rested for a time. From here upward my climbing way was laborious but fess dangerous. I reached the top of the canon just as the sun was sinking down behind the snowy range, and hastened to our camp at the mouth of the canon, where [ found my brother all safe. ‘ Charléy,’ said he, ‘ have you had your head ina flour sack?’ It was then [ discovered that my hair was as white us you see it now.” >_> P+ > The Zulu War. The Dy <%. facts of the war as follows :—- ‘Small wonder that the Zulu war is popular in Natal! Already the war has cost $35,000,000, and the expenditure for military purposes is at the rate of more than $5,000,000 a month, or more than $100 a World recalls some of the minute. The rate of transporiation from Durban to Pietermaritzburg — fifty-four miles—is 5 cents a pound, which is re- garded as too much by four-fifths : this is seven times as much asit costs to send freight from London to Pert Natal,-a dis- tance of 7,000 miles. Not until the new grass springs up in October can an advance be made, and it will be necessary to have five months’ supplies in the advanced depots, so that Sir Garnet Wolseley’s esti- mate that the war would cost at lease $100,- 000,000, aad prebably $150.000,6)0, is quite likely to prove correct. 15 would pay an American, we fancy, to take out a ship load of mules and’ wagons either to sell them or take contraets for transportation. ee ee ne Ask Yourself these Questions. Constitutional Catarrh Remedy CURES CATARRH. Hear what a Reverend Gentleman says of the Constitutional Ren.edy. a D T. J. B. Harprxe, Esq., Brockville, Ont.:— Dear Sir—lIt fs now two years since your “Censtitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced to me. Ihave waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permatent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be “too good to true.” I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh, In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par- ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from thie head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit upin the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third, I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head. A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certiticate, unsolicited, with leave to Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister.
