Prefer a well pulverized, clean surface, in an orchard with moderately rich soil, to heavy manuring, and a surface covered with a hard crust and wéeds and grass. 5. Remember that it is better to set out ten trees with all the necessary care to make them live and flourish, than to set ont a hundred trees, and have them all die from carelessness. 6. Remember that tobacco is a poison, | and will kill insects rapidly, if properly applied to them, and is one of the best drugs for freeing fruit trees rapidly of small vermin—and is better used in this way than to make men repulsive and diseased. _~><-— — Insects seem to be ravaging the crops of New Brunswick. Hon. W. E. Perley de- scribes the terrible work of insects in Sun- bury Csunty, N. B. Much of the standing hay at Maugerville and Sheffield, especi- ally on the intervales, has been utterly ruined by the army worm. One hundred tons of hay belonging to Lieutenant Gov- ernor Wilmot, at Belmont, is destroyed, and Mr. Geo. Perley, of Mangerville, will lose fifty tons of hay which a fortnight ago was in prime condition. Other farmers lose more or less. The potato bug is also doing some damage, and the efforts of the farmers to resist their advances have had little effect. They are far more numerous than ever before, and had they commenced operations early this season, would entirely destroy the potato crop along the river counties. From various sections of Sun- bury County reports arrive, that the Hes- sian fly is holding high carnival among the oats. Drought is also burming up the crops at Upper Gagetown and back of Lake- ville. The entire product of the Yarmouth Woollen Mills for the current year has been contracted for, and the capacity of those mills, ere long, be doubled to meet the demands for their excellent goods that are everywhere coming into use. A Montreal house bas given to this mannfactory a per- manent order that for years to come will also consume more than half of its entire production and in Montreal alone the Yarmouth Woollen Mills can find a market for all the cloth they may choose to make. The impetus thus given to Yarmouth enter- prise, will, it is thought, result in the im- médiate construction of a Cotton Manufac- tory in that town, a large proportion of the stock for which has already been subscribed. —K3 change.
