The supre-structure is now well under way. The new building will replace the present one which was erected in 1875 and was one of the first brick struct- ures in Montague. To elder "Alexander Crawford". goes the honor oi organising the first Baptist Church at Three Riv- era in 1812 - a sectional the is- land then newly settled. lie was the first man to administer bap- tism by emersion on Prince Ed- ward Island. He served the Bay tist cause in'various areas until his death in 1828. William Mcbaren also b a recognized leader oi the church at three Rivers. The site oi the first meeting house is now the Brudenell ceme- tery. In those days few people owned carriages or horses; conse- quently thcy mostly went to the meeting place by boat or canoe, or walked along foot paths in the woods. In 1832 John Show was ordain- ed by Rev. 'l'.S. lianilng and Ed- ward Mnnning. He gave long years of service to the church. In 1843 a new meeting place was built two miles inland from the first one, on the road from Cardigan to Montague. Some time later this building was destroyed by fire. The need for a proper place of worship was sorely tell. in 1075 the present brick structure was built, and the inside finished the spring of 1876. The dcdlca” took place in connection with the meeting of the Prince Edward Is- land associatio oi that year. Llc. I).li. Simpson was called to the pastorate and ordained that year. He was the first pastor in regular succession of Rev. John Shaw. , - Many have served and history has beenilnade during the years. Rev. A.A. MacLeod who later went as a missionary to India was bap- tized here. Three ordination ser- vices have been held in this church United Baptists Of Montague d A Church Dr. Gordon of Montreal was grant- ed a preachers license. A license to preach was also granted Mal- colm A. Mncl.ean, who later was ordained and held a church in Calgary. William D. Johnston who now as senior deacon was grantsq-gg. punching license. it was 'a missionary church. In 185! Three Rivers and East Point ' d a missionary ' . Fund were raised to help the more needy churches on the Island. Rev. John Shaw was president. In 18& at the request oi the people in Sturgeon they became a branch of the work here. Murray River and Murray Harbor are now affiliates in this organization. , The loyalty and courage of the ” soithe" i, United Baptist Church is to be commend- ed, as they strive toward the goal of building their new church. Work is being financed by free will of- ferings. The plan of the church was drawn by Leltoy White. The building is a wooden structure 25 x 42 feet with all heating system with seating accomodstion for no. There will be a uaptistery at the rear oi the church with an ap- proach irom the basement. Work is under direction of Rev. A.M. Rogerson the pastor, and Le- Roy White clerk oi the church.
