(Continued from firet page.) enjoyed the whole freedom of the United States, have had the whole advantage of coramereial unioa, of semrestricted reci- procity, and yet you haveonly to take the records te show that the difliculties existing there, with respect to those lands, are greater, by far, than those which exist with regard to our own lands. Suppose my hon. friend proves that there is net 4 rapid rise in the values of lands in this country, dees that prove they would be more rapid if unrestricted reciprocity were the rele? Does that prove they would be more rapid if we had a wider channel of commercial intercourse, unreatricted reci- procity with the United States! That is what they have got to prove before they establish the proposition that the heroic remedy should be applied, founded upon this asareason for its being applied. | desire in the next place to nvtice the state- ment which was made, that there has been a tetal reduction in the trade, and that there is no inter-provincial trade in this country and there cannot possibly be any. The hon. member for South Ox- ford (Sir Richard Cartwright) was not in- genious in that argument or in that state- ment. He did not state the whole truth, and he did not state it in the way it should be stated in order to convey the impression that ought to be conveyed. He took the year 1873, an abnormal year, and he made the statement that the volume of trade is to-day less than it was in 1873, and he proves it by what? By simply taking the amount of foreign trade, theexports and imports. He said nothing with regard to the great decrease in the volume of that trade when he was in power from 1873 to 1879, when it went from $127,000,000 of imports for home consumption down to $72,000,- 000 when it went from §217,000,000 of total trade down te $158.000,000 ; and yet although there were a constant and fear- volume of ful diminutioag of the volume of trade, measured as he measured it, there was no need than for the heroic remedy! There was no resolution then, embodied as the principle of Government and carried out im practice, that woe must have unrestricted reciprocity with the United States. No, wiser counsels prevailed then. (To be Continued. ) Desires to Live at Peace. The editor of the Spring Hill News was sorely tried, last week, as evidenced by the following in the last issue of his paper : ‘““We desire to live in peace with all. We want to run our business in our own way, without interference, Do we ask too much ? If we are not allowed to do this we can fight. We have ne desire to do so. But we refuse to be bull-dowsed by a political sore-head, of bad reputation, or a religious (?) sore-head, whe, in the livery of heaven, serves thedevil by mischief-makingand med- dling with other people’s affairs. Even now weare willing to live at peace with | these people, and to continue to extend to | them the privileges of the paper. We have | been uniformly kind and courteous. But our stock of patience is rapidly becoming exhausted. —_—— Heners Carried off by an Ameri- can Lad.
