It would be a great aid to arranging matches and bringing the different Provinces together. It would make feasible an annual match between each of the Maritime Provinces, and also between Maritime aud Upper Provinces. An idea prevails in Ontario that that Province pos- sesses all the good cricketers in the Dominion, This idea is somewhat egotistical and not a little erroneous. ‘There are plenty of players in these Maritime Provinces who would, we think, hold their own against any from Ontario. By all means let us have the Asso- ciation, with which the Island will join heart and hand. > — A Great Races ARRANGED.—The two great special stakes, which were opened by the Monmouth, N. J., Park Association, for the purpose of bringing all the best horses to- gether, have received even more numerous entries than was anticipated by those who professed to know. Since Iroquois won the Derby there has been an earnest desire ex- pressed by turfmen in this country to see him run in company with other horses of the highest class, ard upon his arrival the Mon- mouth Park Association lost no time in for- mulating a stake, the conditions of which would suit the owners and test the merits of their horses at a fair distance with respectable weights, It was called the Monmouth Stakes, of $500 each, half forfeit, with $5,000 added, the winner to receive $1,000 out of the stakes; weights seven pounds above the scale; one mile and a half.
