on Dec. 23rd, was interesting and ln-
structlve alike to pupils teacher and
parents. There were thirty-one schol-
ars and twenty-six visitors present.
Messrs James Saunders, William Prof
itt, Andrew MacLeod, Michael Ready
assisted the teacher, Margaret L.`
Brown, in examining the scholars in
the various branches, after which o.
program consisting of recltations and
singing was nicely rendered 'by a
number of the pupils and much.en-
cises, the pupils and teacher received
words af praise and encouragement
ln their eiiorts from many ol the
ratepayers who expressed their entire
satisfaction in the progress of the
school. The pupils then kindly pre-
sented their teacher with a beautiful
gold watch chain, accompanied with
the following address:-Dear Teacher
-As the joyous season oi Xmas app-
roaches, we naturally turn our thou-
ghts to our dearest friends end great-
est benefactors. During. the time you
have presided over our school you
have proven yourself an efficient and
exemplary teacher and at the same
time have won our unmeasured love
and respect. Our many shortcomings
have no doubt, severly tried your
patience, but on these occasions you
have always shown a spirit of for-
bearance, evcr ready to admonisb and
advise but never to coerce, whilst it
has always been your aim to instill
into our minds the utmost amount of
knowledge, you have ever exercised
that judgement which characterizes
the real instructor; arranging our
tasks so that knowledge and pleasure
alike would result from their persu-
ence. At this joyous season, Dear
Teacher, we have cause to rejoice;
we are happy and rejoice at the rec-
ollection of those school days which
you have made so pleasant and prof-
itable for ue; we rejoice that you are
still to remain our teacher for a. time
at least, would that we could pro-
long that time. We assure you Dear
Teacher, that you have won our high-
est esteem and regard, and wish to
offer you this little token, which is
of small intrinsic value, 'but express-
ive of our love and respect. Please
accept it, and with it our united

Mary's Hall, Souris, Rev. Dr. Gillis,
P. P. of. Fairfield, gave a very ins-
tructive lecture on Socialism. The
lecture was under the auspices oi
Branch 261, C. M. B. A. Mr. Andrew
Peters, vice-president of the Branch
occupied the chair. Dr. Gillis clearly
outlined the origin, nature and ob-
jects of_socialism and, as clearly
showed it to be in its origin ia nox-
ious growtn; in its nature a pernic-
ious theory fostering lmpracticable
changes; in its objects for the most
part bad, unworthy and revolution
ary, pointing out that no consistent
christian could be a socialist in any
shape or form, as socialism denies
christianity and the existence of the
spiritual and supernatural are of any-
thing beyond the natural and mater-
ial. At the close the Reverend lectur-
er was tendered with a hearty vote
of thanks, which was moved by W. J.
Paquet, seconded .by Lauchlin Mc-
lnnis and supported by Rev. R. B.
Macdonald, P. P., J., J. Hughes, Dr.
A. A. Macdonald 'and A. L. Fraser;
all of whom expressed their appre-
ciation of the excellent address given
by Rev. Dr. Gillis on so important
and timely a topic.
