} { ; | | a _— a PLENETARY PopuLation.— On the interesting question of the plurality of worlds, professor Newcomb remarks as follows: “ Enthusiastic writers not only sometimes people the planets with in- habitants, but calculate the possible popu- lition by the number of square miles of surface, and throw in a liberal supply of astronomers, who scan our earth with powerful telescopes. The possibility of this 11 would be presumption to deny ; but that it is extremely improbable, at least in the ease of any one planet, may be seen by reflecting on the brevity of eivilization on our globe when compared with the existance of the globe itself as a plaret. The latter has probably been re- yolving io its orbid 10,000,000 years ; man has probably existed on it less than 10.000 years ; civilization less than 4,000 ; telescopes little more than 200. Had an angel visited it at intervals of 10,000 years to seck for thinking beings, he ‘would have been disappointed a thousand times or more. Leasoving from analosy, we are glad to believe that the sxme dte- nts might await him who should to planct, und qe apoinime now travel from planet from system to system, on a similar search, uotil he had examined many thousand planets.” A most remarkable—and, perhaps, un- precedented—case of murder has just been tried in Glasgow. A man named Fraser had loog Lecn subject to som- nambulism, which was itself of un extra- ordinary character. He did not, as somnambulists generally do, merely wan- der about unconsciously in his sleep, but was liable to be seized by paroxysm of frenzy, during the continuance of which there was always a large measure of danger to any one whom be encountered or whom he was moved to attack. The strange disease reached ito culminating stage some time ago, when, io this ab normal state, he assaulted and killed his own little son. At the trial he pleaded, in his detence the facts, as related, and the jury considered it their duty to acquit him of the awful crime with which he was charged. The press has, however, very justly directed attention to the blameful heedleseness of the man him- self and of his friends, who, knowing his propensities during his sleep-walking fits, took no measures to secure the safety of those whom he might meet in his nightly wanderings. It is -trange that io i lmost all cases where there is peril from any kind of mental aberration, which is not clear madness, the same carelessness is manifested. The melancholy example ought to serve as a warning to all who are acquainted with cases in any way akin to the one in question to see that no opportunity is afforded the sufferer of doing harm to himself or others. - i + Enjoy Life. What a truly beautiful world we live in. Nature gives us grandeur of moun tains glens and oceans, and thousands of means for enjoyment. We can desire no better when in perfect health ; but how often do the majority of people feel like giving it up disheartened, discouraged and worried out with disease, when there is no occasion for this feeling, as every sufferer can easily ob- tain satisfactory proof that Green’s August Flower will make them as free from disease as when born. Dyspepsia and Liver Com- plaint are the direct cause of seventy-five per cent. of such maladies as Biliousness, Indigestion, Sick Headache, Costiveness, Nervous Prostration, Dizziness of the Head, Palpitation of the Heart, and other distress- ing symptoms. The Greatest Medical Discovery since the Creation of Man, or since the Commencement of the Christian Era. There never has been a time when the heal- ing of so many different diseases has been caused by outward application as the present. It is an comune’ fact that over half of the entire population of the globe resort to the use of ordinary plasters. Dr. MELVIN’s CAPSICUM POROUS PLASTERS are acknowledged by all who have used them, to act quicker than any other plaster they ever before tried, and that one of these plasters will do more real service than a hundred of the ordinary kind. All other plasters are slow of action, and require to be worn continually to effect a cure; but with these it is entirely dif- ferent: the instant one is applied the patient will feel its effect. Physicians in all ages have thoroughly tested and well know the effect of Capsicum; and it has always been more or less used as a medical agent for an outward application ; but it is only of very recent date that its advan- tages in a porous plaster have been discovered. Being, however, convinced of the wonderful cures effected by DR. MELVIN’S CAPSICUM Porous PLASTERS, and theirsuperiority over all other plasters, they now actually prescribe them, in their practice, for such diseases as rheumatism, pain in the side and back, and all such cases as have required the use of plasters or liniment. After you have tried other plas- ters and liniments, and they have failed, and you want a certain cure, ask your druggist for DR. MELVIN’S CAPSICUM POROUS PLASTER. You can hardly believe your own convictions of its wonderful effects. Aithough powerful and uick in its action, you can rely on its safety or the most delicate person to wear, as it is free from lead and other poisonous material commonly used in the manufacture ef ordin- ary plasters. One trial is a sufficient guarantee of its merits, and one plaster will sell hundreds to your friends. sk your druggist for DR, MELVIN’s CAPst- | cum Porovs PLASTER, and take no other; or, on receipt of 25 cents for one, $1 for five, or $2 for 2 dozen, they will be mailed, post paid, to avy address in the United States or Canadas.
