HANS HOLMER WON POWDER HILL MARATHON EDINBURGH, Scotland, Jan._ 2- Hans Holmer. formerly of Halifax, today won the annual Pl‘0f€B9i0l'10»1 modified Marathon race. He led at the finish by 20 yards and beat a large field containing many promi- nent internaticnal athletes. To~da.y was the second occasion on whl0l1 Holmer carried off the event, as he was also victor in 1911. The race was over a distance of 15 miles and Hans Holmer’s time was 1 hour, 22 minutes and 12 seconds, or 27 seconds more than the time taken last year by the winner on that oc- casion. _ Holmer was followed to the tape by George Dinning of London, Eng- land, last year’s winner, and Willie Kolehmainen of Finland, the winner in 1912. The three men were closely hunched together from the ten mile mark until they entered the straight for home, when Holmer spurted and won a fine race. UN- MH. WILLIAM HOLMES The death of Mr. William Holmes occured at, his home in Kingston on Christmas] eve. Mr. Holmes was b0l‘h in Kingston 55 yearn ago, and has always lived there. Hs was a man of sterling character, maintain- ing the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens all through his life. For many yearn he was a consistent, active member of the Baptist Church and Eought at all times to promote the cause of religion. He had served the Church as superintendent of the Sunday school, -and was for several years an honored deacon of the church. Twenty nine years ago ~Mr. Holmes and Miss Katie Stevenson were united in marriage, and estab- lished the home in which he always found is greatest comfort and his most' valued companionship. For more than a year Mr. Holmes has suffered unspeakable torture from an aggravated eczema. His death which came suddenly at last, due to an at- tack of pneumonia, was for him 'u happy release. The ‘funeral was held on Friday, and notwithstanding the severe storm, was largely attended. His pastor, Rev. C. B. McLaarn, ns- sisted by Rev. George Orman con- ducted services at the home. The service at the grave was performed by the Orange Lodge of which he was a member. Besides his widow there are left four sons, Everett, Tyrus and Melvin at home, and Lee in Sauk., one brother James Holmes and three sisters, Mrs. Benj. Newson, Mrs. Samuel Clow, und Mrs. Thou, Henderson, and ii. large connection _of relatives and friends to mourn their loss MRS. JOHN McLEAN. There passed pepcefiilly away at Pcter’s Road, on December 25th, after a long and painful illness, Mrs. John McLean, (nee Miss Marion Mc- Donald) aged 25 years. After settl- ing nt Edmonton, Alta., the decasacil from ill health revisited her home at l’etar’s Road. Here she sufficiently recovered to be able to journey a- gain to the West, but in a short time she became seriously affected. and it became necessary for theifmnily to remove to l’eter’a Road in order that the heat attenddnce might he Doss- lble. At times _owing to the efficient medical skill and loving care in the old home, it seemed aa if recovery were possible, but the deceased sud- denly aaaumed serious complications and on Christmas morning her spirit quietly quitted its earthly tenement and passed away to he with God. During the sfckVnass the departed ex- emplified great patience and cheer- fullnass, and though often times dia- treased always looked on the bright side, with calm trust in her Saviour. Even in death, as u flower which droopa in the chill of wluter’s frost, so her lovelinesa remained, and her countenance had a composure and serenity which suggested a peaceful sleep. The funeral service, held in the church at Peters Road, was coh- ducted by Rev. A. J. McNeill 'of Murray Harbor South, who spoke most impressively from the text: “For he doth not afflict. wil1'ingly,nor grieve the children of m-en." The choir sang several selections, favour- ites of the departed some of which were: “Rock of Ages," "Will the Clrcle be Unbroken?" “Some day We'1l Understand." The large audi- ence preaent, testified to the respect and deep sympathy for the, departed and -family. The remains accompani- ed by alarge concourse of relatives and friends was interred in the cem- etery at Murray Harbor North. Deep sympathy, is felt for the two bereav- ed young chfldren remaining, and for the devoted husband. Who being in the far Walt, made it impossible for him to be present at_the_la9l'-._ Ma? their sorrow he lessened by the hope of n joyous reunion in a world where there are no partings. The surviv- ing members of the family besides the sorrowlng father and mother are: Heath and Leslie and Mrs. J oaeph Morrison of Edmonton, Alt,a.,- and Grace now attending P. W. C., Char- lottetown. The futher and mother, Mr. and Mrs. William Macdonald, are deeply thankful to the many kind friends and relatives who have shown sympathy and aid in their time of sorrow.-Corr MRS. ALEX. MucDONALD.
