Zd-A new type oi X-ray tube. which like a magic lantern shows the lnncr doings of an atom Xlllll-llllned 3W- million times, was announced today at Purdue University. The tube is set up like a “lan- tern’ and its invisible rays are io- cussed upon a photographic film nine iect away. Much as a show- man would insert a slide in his isn- tcrri, the scientists insert s piece of “excited" copper, that is; copper the atomroi which an activated- by treatment with some form oi cnergy. Upon the photographic film, after a minute's exposure, there forms an image quite like a picket fence, with numerous pickets missing. These pickets are the "spectral lines," each oi which depicts some- thing going on inside an atom. Two oi these lines srs particu- larly remarkable. They are ls far apart as the width of the head of a pin. But this space between them rcprescnts tha distance an electron has "moved over" within the copper i atom, a distance estimated at. a 200 [millionth part oi an inch. The move made when the e‘ectron changes _from one "orbit? to another, and leach o! its orbits shows as I. line. The tube ls exceedingly “fast? It will X-ray clearly the atomic "bones" of solidified vapor, which hitherto has evaporated too rapid- ly to be caught in this manner in the open air. Formerly such pic- tures had to be made of vapors in a. vacuum. Tile tube is useful also tor tak- ing X-rays oi numerous organic substances which disintegrate rap- idly. Dr. Lnrk-Horovitz said the construction is so simple that "any mechanic can make one oi these lobes.’ H's W fc~llcnry Jinirax. Originally holes were bored through logs and this method was satisfactory where pipe with n. small diameter was re- quired. The next development was the wood stave pipe with the staves held iri position by wire or by steel hoops, and this type has been used for diameters ranging from six inches to six feet and over. Under certain conditions the wooden stoves decayed and this was over- come by" treating the slaves with creosote. A low initial cost, to- gether with long life, results in a very moderate zlnliuul charge for Wfltlfl stave pipe and it; is frequently used for town rind city water rup- pllcs.
