"The enemy may not deprive you of
life or limb." says a medical corres-
pondent. "but lt is fairly certain that
your own artillery will slowly but
surely make you deaf."
Several officers who recently retur-
ned on furlough from the French
front were called up for examination
nnd found to have suffered more than
a fifty per cent. impairment in henr-
ing. owing to the incessant our-spllb
ting reports of their own guns. The ’
exact physiological reason wus usual-
ly fottnd in a rupture of n drum mem-
brane, with occnslonally a shattering
or concussion of the aural labyrinth.
Both the French and American na-
vles have made special provision for
the prevention of gun deafness. The
French have several ingenious arti-
ficial contrlvances, while the Ameri-
cans are said to use a bllnker-like
bandage of vulcunile rubber, with cel-
luloid stoppers for the ear holes. The
Japanese are also reported to- have
adopted mechanical conirlvunccs
which lessen the shock on thc enr
