“; . NEWS BY TELEGRAPH. Special despatch to Examiner: Lonpon, July 22. Sir Garnet Wolsely hasarrived at Laonaco, Island of Cyprus. The single scull race for Wingfield sculls came off to-day on the Thames course. It was from Putney to Mortlake, and there were but two -competitors— Playford, the present holder of the sculls, and A. Payne, of the Moulsey Rowing Club. Playford was never headed, and although the race was at onetime very close, it was won éasily at the finish by Playford; time 24 m. 35 sec. The Standard’s Vienna correspondent telegraphs that he can vouch for the accur- acy of the statement that Prince Bismarck, not long since, informed the Italian Ambas- sador that it was of paramout interest to the German race that Trentius and the City of Trieste should never become Italian. Berry, July 22. The National Liberals admit that they expect to suffer some losses in the approach- ing elections for members of Reichstadt; but think that they will maintain a majo- rity in that body. Lonpon, July 22. The Times published, officially, a para- graph denying that Lord Dufferin consent- ! ed to prolong his term of office as Governor General of Canada, and announcing that he will leave Canada in September. Orrawa, July 22. The Minister of Militia arrived here to- day. The crops are so heavy in some parts of Ontario that farm hands enough cannot be had to gather the grain. The wages ofiered are $2 and $2.50 per day. Dorcuester, July 22. Annie Parker's cross-examination finished to-day. Her evidence is substantially the same as previously given. Str,—If Mr. Speaker Beer should furnish the contractors of the Asylum with a large number of brick, would he violate the In- dependence of Parliament Act? Yours, A VovTeERr. Ch’town, July 23, 1878. ——_— +> — “Ducks and Drakes.” To the Editor of the Examiner :— Srr—I went out yesterday to McNally’s Marsh, about ten miles from town, just to see how the young ducks were getting on, and for mere form sake took with me my gun and dog. Judge of my astonishment to find the shooting und covered with men and degs trying to da duck to shoot. Of course there wasn’t one there, the ground having beeu thoroughly ahot over more than a week ago. What I want to know is, where is that ‘‘Duck Act”? It’s too bad that one should have to drive ten miles and not get ashot, and as late in the year as 22d of Fay, too. Yours truly, Duck Suor. P. S.—The person who fired most shots at tlhe marsh hens lives close to Black Sam’s Bridge. I won't print his name this = . &. —_——_—_—__<«-<>e—- ——— ‘A Monster Reform Meeting.” T'o the Editor of the Examiner. Str,—The ‘Reform Party” intended, or rather tried, to hold a meeting here on Friday évening, to appoint delegates to a con vention, which they are to have in Charlottetown. They had printed handbills posted all around, headed ‘‘ Monster Meeting of the Reform Party,” 2nd at the bottom ‘“‘ All friends please attend.” Only four friends attended, and two of them felt too sick to remain. it is said that the other two arranged themselves into a *¢ monster meeting.” Big Sandy occupied the chair, and Big Archy acted as secretary. Then, on motion of Big Archy, it was resolved, tnanimously, that Archy and Sandy be the delegates. The fact of it is, Mr. Editor, they have no show here. Messrs. Pope and Brecken will lead the poll by at least two hundred, at Wueat.ey River. July 22, 1878. —— i Sa —e - Marriage and Music. To the Editor of the Examiner: S1r,—Last night the inhabitants of the north side of Charlottetown must have had a rich treat of music. It seems that a young couple were getting married, and the friends and those that were acquainted with the bride- groom and bride, assembled to do honour to the occasion. The Bjuvenile tin-pan-trumpet- cow-horn and milk-pan-drum-band, was the first to arrive, headed by Professor Chavari. The music by this band was very delicious, Of course there were a few discordant notes, but that could not be wondered at, when you take into aecount the little practice that this band got. ‘There were, no doubt, many of the in- struments out of order. I tooknotice that the drum had only one handle, anda piece of a hand towel drawn through the bottom. This, itself, would materially spoil the sound; but, on the whole, it was quite a success, and had such an effect on some of the inmates that they could not contain themselves in the house, but rushed out in their shirt sleeves and were going to castigate some of the band; but the music had such a thrilling effect on the bride groom that he had to go downtown for certain Officers. Shortly after—when drawing to- wards midnight—the regular band—or what I sup to te the regular band—came up to do honor to the occasion. By this time a multitude of people were assembled; but the music of this band, was very good, especially while playing ‘‘I’ll take to myself a Wife,” ** What shallthe harvest be?’ “ And to my Comrades.” No couple, as far as I can learn, has ever been so highly honored in Charlotte- town before, as to have two bands of music to Wait on them unasked. No doubt but what the Juvenile Band will be the one forthe next EIN eR EE OE A NT RE of giving a new name to the settlement, Mr. me generai election demonstration, as they throw (talbraith in the shade. Where the city officers went, or how the bride looked, I could not tell, as the lamp did not burn very clear. Yours, &e., A Lover or Goop Music. TION (Limited) beg to intimate to the Public that the price of SYDNEY COAL has been Reduced to $2 per ton of 2240 Ibs., a price which it is hoped will place it within the reach of all consumers. The opening of the new winning at “ THE SYDNEY MINES” and the fact that the SYDNEY COAL now being shipped is all from the DEEP taken in connection with re cent improvements in the process of screening, alfords purchasers a positive guarantee of the very superior quality and condition of the SYDNEY COAL now olfered for sale, It is a well-know fact that for many years past the prices of other Cape Breton coals have been regulated by the rates fixed for SYDNEY COAL; but while it is true that other coals, to get a sale at all, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAL, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior lasting qualities of SYDNEY COAL when compared with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and convenience, is in favor of SYUNEY COAL, even at a much | higher price. The General Mining Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ** EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” “SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” etc., etc., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coal as SYDNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts to sell coal by such means are only so many admissions on the part of those who make them of the sranpDArp character of SYDNEY COAL. It has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances parties giving orders to trackmen and others for SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal. The Public are cautioned against permitting themselves to be imposed apon in this way. Every vessel loaded at THE SYDNEY MINES is furnished with a certificate of her cargo being Sydney Coal. Parties purchasing should satisfy themselves by demanding the production of this certiticate. The ‘‘ Sydney Coal”’ is registered under the laws of the Dominion, and unauthorized parties using the Trade Mark *“*SYDNEY COAL” are habie to prosecution. CUNARD & MORROW, Agents G. M.
