ANARGHY AND ANARCHISTS-
The innrderous ussiciation of
Anarchists may now be said to over
spread the world. It is the terror of
the rulers of the earth. Known by
diiferent names the Anarchists of
central and western Europe, the
Nihilists of Russia, the hlaiia. of Italy
a.n~l the Black Hand of Spain and
,Portugal are one in theirinethods and
objects. It is ti ue that assassination
of kings and rulers has been common
enough in all ages and in many
countries The murders of presidents
Lincoln and Gariield, for instance,
were in no way connected with
Anarchy, or for that matter with any,
outside organization. The Anarchist
mo ement proper dates from 1868
and owes its origin to a man of title,
Baron Bakou-.ine of Geneva or Basie,
Switzerland. Its growth and exten
sion are due to various causes, but
mainly to the oppressions and the
hard conditions of life among the
masses of Europe.
The horrible movement would
never have extended its work and in-
iiuencé and become the haunting
spectre of the palaces as it has, were
its leading spirits such as those who
from time to time do murder in its
name. The leaders of the Anarchists
and Nihilists are in most instances
men of superior education and intel-
lect and not a few of them men of
birth and breeding It is from the
universities of the old world that they
come, though' with minds soured and
embittered by seeing men less learned
and less gifted than themselves enjoy
ing rank, and affluence from which
they have been debarre i. A diplomat
of some note is authority for the
statement that among them are Rus-
sian princes and princesses, Italian
dukes, Spanish counts and marquises,
while German barons abound. The
names of scores of these titled
Anarchists are known and have been
published to the world. The founder
and fa'_hf=r of Anarchism, the above
named Baron Bakounine, was himself
anobleman of ancient lineage, asis
Prince Krapotkine of Russia, Prince
Tasca of Sicily and the Marquis' of
Valera of Spain, all of whom are
prominent in the movement. '
Such men as these with the keen-
est intellects, and in some cases suf-`
fering from great wrongs, are the
directors of this warfare upon the es-
tablished order of society. It isbecause
of the ability, determination and
astuteness of its leaders, their
knowledge, and the blind 0b6di8nCe
they are able to exact from their fol-
lowers and instruments, that the
best police of the governments of the
continent have been unable to cope
with them. That the police are ut-
terly unable tosuppress, or even to
check the growth of Anarchism is
freely admitted, as is the fact that
the movement is more widespread and
vast`y stronger in the world togday
than ever it was before. Every im-
aginable device in the shape of
special laws and police legislation has
been resorted to by the governmengg
of the old world to repress Anarchy,
but in vain. The police have the
moral support of the knowledge that
their cause is the cause of law and
order, but tlie support is more than
counterbalauced by the indifference;
to death of 'heir opponents and the
lose in the fight.
In Russia. some fifteen years ego

lt was not until the close of the third
act tollinviiig the pioogue that a real
gi od excuse for passing a bouquet over
the foollights' preseired itself in the
Providence Opera Hou-e, this evening,
when Hall Cai-.eh new playxbearing the
title ot his novel, "The Chiislisn,” was
seen forthe ti st time.
Several hundred pirscns had read
the story aid several hundred were in-
terested in the author,v.s well asin Miss
Viola. Allen and the well-balanced com-
pany presenting the play.
Every stat in the theatre was filled,
and the performance was honored by
the presence of Gov. Dyer, who occu-
pied a box adjoining that in which the
author ol the play sat. apparently
deeply engrossed in his own handi-
work. The onlookers were 'made up
largely of the novelist’s admirers; con-
sequently, the house was not overflow-
ing with the customary first nighters,
but enough were presentto realize that
they had been given more than two,
hours of gl om, unrelicveil by any
touches of real dramatic ilre or relieving
comedy.
Tne play like the novel is deeply re-
ligious. It does not preach any new
theology or illuminate the horizon of
faith, hope or charity. After its more
than three hour.~_ of preaching, no new _
ideas were developed- in the caretull
spectators, or religious tendencies l
quiokened in the least.
“The Christian" employs beautiful
sc-nery in every act, and the prologue
representing a ruined castle in the Isle
of Man. was especially agreeable to the
eye.
Mis Allen now and then had an op-
portunity to reveal some of the drama-
tic strength that had endeared her. to
the general public, but it-carmot be said"
that Glory Quayle is an ideal part for
the accomplished actr-ss. She was not
convincing in the lighter passages or *
happy in her irivolity. ' _
_Itwas superficial and unreal. When
she rose to artistic dignity. This was
especially true when the religious fana-
tic. John Storm-, invaded her lodging
rooms to kill her. In her plerior
safety and her reminding' him of his love
and the old happy days, she was pecu-
liarly effrctive, and the strength of the
playing called for the elevation of the
curtain three times. .
' Cries of "Caine, Caine!" brought
the author to the stage front. He
spoke ot the gratifying ‘reception of a
son of old England with the _people _ot
New England. He was especially
pleased with the reception accorded his
