12 Arts & Entertainment Benefit concert for human rights group By RYAN O'CONNOR On Friday, November 6, there will be an all-ages benefit concert for Enlacé, a human rights organization working with the peasants of Chiapas, Mexico. Enlacé is one of many groups helping to protect Chiapans against military and paramilitary intimidation and violence. The show is being put on by members of the Charlottetown Youth For So- cial Justice, and will be featur- ing local hard core and punk bands. The concert will also feature two bands from Hali- fax: Led By Regret and Snot Party. Led by Regret is “an 80’s straight-edge influenced hard core band,” while Snot Party plays “crazy, fast goof- core” music. The latter’s crazy stage antics have al- ready had them chased by a mob out of one Maritime city. Also on the roster are Organizer Lionel Stanley with the Elancé poster tarized four years ago in an attempt to crush an insurrec- tion by the EZLN (Zapatista Army for National Liberation), a group that demanded an end to the poverty and oppression that characterizes the region. Many villages are forced to endure continued military oc- cupation and daily harassment. One of the more dra- matic examples of the terror facing the people of Chiapas occurred last December, when 45 indigenous peasants were brutally massacred by a state- sponsored paramilitary group. At the concert, there will be further information availableregarding the Chiapas PEI bands POS, Watchmaker, Bliss and Master Disgrace. Recently, one of the or- ganizers, UPEI student Lionel Stanley, spoke about the event. “After costs [for pro- duction of the show] are met, all proceeds will be given to Dr. Tim Bood from Halifax, to deliver to Enlacé when he goes to work in a Chiapas hospital the following week,” says Stanley.
