Pros cont'd from p. 9 f against \Toronto. Highly paid Catfish Hunter started off the nineteen to three loss, but then watched the crucial series with the Red Sox. Manager Billy Mar- tin decided instead to use Ron‘ Guidry,¢Ed Figueora and Mike'Torrez. They won two fo three. Los Angeles, Kansas City and Philadelphia remain un- challenged. The Dodgers have already clinched first, while the Royals and Philiies will soon do likewise. In the National League East however, it could have been different. Chicago and Pitf tsburgh’were crippled by injuries to Bruce Sutter‘ and Willie Stargell. Al- though the Pirates are try- ing gallantly, they have no real hope. Players continue to reach milestones. Tony Perez drove in the twelve hundredth run of his ca- reer and Tom Seaver won his two hundredth game. The Mets traded Seaver on June l5. Originally New Yorkers regarded the deal with disfavor, but such 0- pinion has changed. The players they received have all been earning their keep. Doug Flynn has started at shortstop. Pat Zachry pitcheS' a regular turn and Dan Norman is doing‘weli in the minors; The real prize however, was Steve Hendersdn. The youngSter is a star and has been af- fectionately nicknamed “Stevie Wonder”. The team plans to build its future a- round him. An average of three people a season die of heart attacks in major league ball parks. The Atlanta Braves however haven't generated enough excitement to cause a fat- ality for two years. . Joe Namath started as quarterback for Los Angeles 'Rams in their regular sea- son.opener. Coach Chuck Knox made the deeision despite Joe's poor exhibition re- cord. The quarterback com- pleted only twenty-three of fifty—two passes for 327 yards and only one touch- downs. He was sacked eleven times and interCepted four times. Not surprisingly, the team had only one pre-- season victory. Most C.F.L. teams are packing up N.F.L. cuts, but Toronto Argonauts are play- ing musical quarterbacks. They have released Dennis Franklin, reactivated George Mira and acquired Clint Lon- gley. The latter backed up Roger Staubach in Dallas un- til the two had a fist fight and Longley was dealt off. Hopefully he'll fit in bet- rter with Toronto. The football standings ‘changed only slightly this week. The surprises were Calgary upsetting Winnipeg and Toronto defeating Mon- treal. The Bonbers have no consistency and may miss the playoffs. The Alouettes can't handle the Argonauts. If they meet in the E.F.C. final we can expect only " the unexpeCted.
