UPEI Student Union Elections Are On. by Catherine SWEET Want to know why the govern- ment never listens to student’s requests? Because University students have an incredibly low voter turnout. Why should any politician be con- cerned with a group of adults that are old enough to vote but choose not to? The best thing about student govern- ment is that their only responsibility is to look out for students. This year, the UPEISU has two candidates running for each of the three executive positions. Being elect- ed is President, Executive Vice President and Vice President Activities. You pay over $150 a year for work that’s done by the UPEISU and you have a right to have your say. Two experienced young men are running for President—Nick Gaudet and Chris Power. Both have been on the Student Union for a couple of years and have represented UPEI students on federal concerns. Along with other responsibilities, in the event that the President cannot perform his duties (it’s like Miss America!), the Executive VP stands in. This year, our choices for Executive VP are Krista Gallant and Phil MacDonald. Responsible for planning next year’s events in the new Student Union Centre is the VP Activities; running are Brodie MacRae and Matt McCarville. These six students are vying for a position on next year’s executive. You may notice a small change in the elected executive this year-no VP Finance. It was decided in council this year that the VP Finance was going to be made into a hired position to pre- vent mathematically—inept idiots like me from managing the SU funds. If you’re a Business or Economics major (or at least have Accounting 201 and 202) and want a paid job on the Student Union next year, enquire at The Barn. Keep an eye open in your respective faculty for students running to represent you. If you’re not sure about voting, ask the candidates or head on down to The Barn. You pay over $150 a year for work that’s done by the UPEISU and you have a right to have your say. And since it’s election season here on campus, why not get in some practice for the next Federal election by casting a ballot on the week of March 25-28? The advance polls are on March 25 and 26 from 6-9pm in the Breezeway outside the Library, and regular polls are March 27 and 28 from 9am to Spm in most Faculty buildings. ILI’s Got your degree?
