We have resources and the inventive minds to make our earth a veritable paradise but we constantly waste our substance along with the flower of our youth, is endless warfare. To lo- calize the situation, imagine Summerside and Charlottetown so jealous of each other's advan- tages and possibilities that they each have to spend a great deal of money to keep prepared against attack from the other. We in Bum- merslde couldnit have our recreation grounds, our newly paved streets. our new Hospital; Charlottetown would have to do without its new Hospital, its sports facilities st Victoria Park, etc. etc. Money for these things would have to go in- to the pot of preparedness for possible war. Sounds fantastic, dosen'til? Butitis merely stating an actual condition of the middle ages. We have cleared all that up. Only on the international level is the dark ages philosophy allow- ed to continue to flourish. We have heard of one of our European "displaced persons" having a. rather disheartening experience on a Nova Scotia farm. The man was hitch-hiking in Prince Edward Island and told his story to the driver who picked him up. He complained of unremit- tinglabor forunusually long hours. poor food and generally abusive treatment. On the surface, at least, the man seemed to be a good type of person. This would, of course be an exceptional case. but one that should be invesiigaied. It is important that we treat those un- fortunate people. leaving their home land and coming to take up their lives among strangers. with The utmost consideration. According to reports, they are usually willing workers. Hatfield and the rain makers who followed him along that moist trail of fame have had no epoch- making success but their effort; appear to have borne some little fruit. Whether they will be able to improve their technique to any great extent is debatable. Now that the rain-makers have established themselves. we wonder how lonsl it will be before the "rain-chasers" will appear. Those are the boys who will really make the headlines. They will have to use their art sparingly and with great wisdom however. Town bills were passed amount- ing to 5940.88. Mr. Elmer Bernard was re-employed as police officer and general duties man for the Town of Kenslngton for the com- ing year at at salary of 81.500. Mr. J. 1". Profitt was reappointed as Town Magistrate. It was noted by His Worship and the councillors that Magistrate Profiti had filled this office for the past 35 years and that at all times his services to the Town of Kensington had been of 1 high order and that the people of the town owe I debt of gratitude to him for the manner in which he has carried out his- duties so punctually and conscient- iously. , It was decided that the streets leading out to Irishtcwn Road. the Mslpeque Road and the Mar-gatc Road be paved this summer as well as Commercial Street and Hartle street. Debentures covering the amount involved would be is- sued for this work by the town. Councillor Kennedy gave notice of motion that at the next regu- lar meeting of the council he would introduce a motion. regard- ing the tax on vacant lots.-S. wsmililtnesses Continued from P588 A 5 other witnesses Gordon Gay testified he was raking his lawn one and one-half tenths of a mile from the car in- volved. He had built a bonfire to burn the rakings and had seen the truck stopped before the ac- cident. Visibility was good and he could see down to the Keppo-ch Road corner. He saw a girl sat- ting in the truck. He had just put a load of weeds on the fire and was standing with his back to the truck when he heard a squeal of brakes and a crash. He turn- ed and looked for a while and saw a crowd there but he did not go there immediately. He saw a car come from the Georgetown and of the road and stop. A woman got in and it went in the direction of Charlottetown. Under further questioning he said when he went to the scene he saw a girl crying over a man. He had not seen the car before th crash. when he did see it the lights were on but they were off on the truck. Witnesswcsiificd the the car was crumpled eslini:-it-ed -the distance between the c:r and the truck at 15 feet. He saw people there but did not see Judge Tweedy. The R.C.M.P. arrived about 45 minutes after the accident and the ambulance about 30 minutes. The car was not nicved. He helped put Gardiner on the stretcher and into the am- bulance which left before the Mounties came. He said the reason he had been standing with his back to the Charloitetown end of the road was to keep the smoke from the bon- fire from blowing on him. He thought a west wind was blowing. bonnet of and he Mr. McPhee stated that. at 7:29 pm. that night the wind was from the east. Mr. McPhec questioned his ability to recognize the sex of a person silling in a parked truck at that distance. Witness said he had good eye- sight. Mrs. Bessie Duffy said she lived south of the Georgetown Road and west of the Kinlock Road. She was crossing a field from her place to that of Mr. Whiston Smith. She had seen the truck moving and also saw it stopped. She had reached the Smith's door when she heard a screech of brakes and heard a crash. She turned without entering the house and went to the road. At the door she had seen Mr. Smith who started go back to the house. When she arrived at the scene the truck was moved ahead. She saw Miss MacDonald. Solomon was on the road and Gardiner was on the shoulder. She saw Mrs. Seller there and also saw Judge Tweedy going to the Smith hnuse. She saw no traffic then nor at the time of the crash. She did see ii car or truck -pull up about five minutes after the accident. Finsl Witness The final witness of the day was Oliver Hume. Mt. Edward Heights. who said he was driving to Murray River that night. He had checked the time as he crossed Hillsborough Bridge and it was 7:10 then. He had no lights on as it was not dark enough. As he turned the Keppoch corner he saw it car and truck down the road he was travelling. The left door of the car was open. He saw no traffic from Soiithport corner to the scene of the accident. He did not stop at the scene as he did not know there had been an accident. He did not notice anything unusual as he psssd as he had to pull far over the cen- tre line to avoid hitting the open car door. Shortly after passing the scene an oncoming ciir crossed the road in front of him to turn into a driveway. He did not see any other clrs coming until he reached the crossroads. He had not turned on the car lights until just this side of Powtisl. Under crossi-examination he said he remembered three can because they were Impressed on his mind. He admitted his watch lost time but maintained it was only about one minute a week. The court adjourned until 10:30 lhis morning. Dorothy. (Mn.
