N.M.U.N and Dr. Frank Bolger to Summerside Rotary Club, Well, another university year has begun and with it the many activities and organization in the National Model United Nations which is beginning to prepare for its third year to represent U.P.E.I. at the 198R N.M.U.N. Conference in New York this coming spring. For those who are not familiar with the N.M.U.N. conference it t is a simulation of the actual proceedings of the United Nations. It involves students from universities and colleges all over North America. Each university and college represents a country that is a member or has representation at the U.N. The students are put on various committees such as human rights, nuclear disarmenent, economic committees etc. On these committees the students act as diplomats and participate in debates on current issues that are being discussed at the real U.N. The aim of these debates is to develop resolutions to be presented at the U.N. General Assembly, the Economic Social Council,:@nd UNCTAC. :\ u ‘n f‘f. . there is much preparation that the representative student must do in order to act out his/her part appropriately. Much experience is to be gained from this conference both academically and socially meeting with fellow students from other parts of Canada, the United States, and Puerto Rico. In the past two years U.P.E.I. has had sizeable delegations at these conferences and from the feed-back received at the conferences, we have been represented well. In taking part U.P.E.I. has also been getting international exposure which only a few other Canadian universities have gained. In taking part in the National Model United Nations, the University of P.E.I. sees itself as a hopeful candidate in representing Canada at the International Model United Nations to be held sometime in 1985. This conference will have delegations from all over the world representing their own country. No doubt an experience of a life-time PAGE 11 The Alumni Luncheon on Tuesday October 3 will have Charlottetown lawyer Dolores Crane, Class of '78, as speaker. The Academic Awards Banquet on Thursday will bring back Wade MacLachlan, Class of '76 to campus. Mr. McLachlan is . now a faculty member in the Faculty of Law at Dalhousie University. Expected to prove popular is a slide presentation at the Faculty Seminar onFriday October 7. Andy Dean, the catering manager will speak on ’Perceptions of the Island as seen by one from away.’ The many projects are expected to appeal to.a wide range of interests, and UPEI hopes many Islanders will come to campus to celebrate their National Universities Week. Now that you are aware of the N.M.U.N. and its valuable usefulness it is the hope of the Organizational Committee for this years conference that the student body, its representatives, and the staff will, as they over- whelmingly did for the past two years support it through our future fund- raising efforts and send our representatives down for another successful conference.
