To Miss Annie Ayers, Teacher of the Primary Department of the Tryon School. Drak Mapame,—Having learned with deep regret that you purpose leaving your present post of duty at an early date, we, the inhabi- tants of School District No. 85, beg leave to address you on the eve of your departure, and express our very high appreciation of your valued services during the six years you have been engaged in teaching. Your methods of unfolding and expanding the intellectual taculties of the youthful pupils under your care, together with the skill in management and discipline so apparent in the ;government of the school, have given the most entirs satisfaction ; and we feel assured that under your instruction in the rudiments of general knowledge, so essential at the out- set, our children have been laying the founda- tion for a good, thorough education. The attention you have given to the devel- opment of the musical powers or the children is most gratifying. A double advantage is thus gained, not only in rendering the Schoo! more interesting and attractive, but a veal benefit is thereby conferred upon the boys and girls in the cultivation of the musical talent, which, in fa. t+: many instances, is suffered to remain dormant for want of proper develop- mene. Your general deportment while among us, as a friend and a Christian, has been uniformly ofan elevating tendency, exerting a gradual yet constant and powerful intaence over those with whom you have been associated, and especially over those under your constant instruction. We congratulate you upon the well-earned reputation accorded to you by the Superinten- dent of Education, ot haying one of the best Primary Departments in this Province. Most gladly would we have retained your services in the future had it been possible for you to have remained, but we must, though reluctantly, acquiesce in your decision. In saying ‘‘ good bye” beg you will kindly secept this purse as a slight token of regard, with our very best wishes for your future welfare. REPLY. To J. J. Skinner, Baptist Minister, Geo. Har- rison, Methodist Minister, Alexander Rob- blee, John N.. Leard, and Robert Leard, on behalf of the inhabitants of Tryon North School, District No. 85. Dear Strs,—Words fail me to express my thanks for such a manifestation of esteem and affection contained in your address, and for | the very haudsome purse you have presented me with. This unexpected expression of kindness from those with whom I have lived so long, and with whom I have spent so many pleasant hours, I shall ever cherish with fond remem- brance, It is with feelings of sorrow I sever the ties that bind me to this place; but, wherever my lot may be cast in the future, I shall always: be pleased to know that I carry with me your esteem and affection. Sincie Copies Two CEnTs. te TOL. 19.~NO. 87... LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. -—~—»— * Pioughshare” on Temperance. Sir,—In your paper, which I am most happy to see you worthily devote to the discussion of all questions pertaining to the good of the community, permit me to offer a few remarks on a subject in which all are ‘more or less interested. The Temperance qaestion is one which no moral or Christian man can shirk. It presses itself upon the attention of every man of integrity, for he is his brother's keeper. It is a question at the present time which should call forth the best powers, noblest gifts and strongest ener- gies of every nght-thinking and moral- hviag member of the community, for the monster vice of intemperance is reigning in onr midst, we might almost say, without let or hindrance. This is true of the ‘sland generally, but especially of the city ; and i molested. for the present, we! all, or nearly all, wink at it or act as if ench a disgraceful and immoral state of affairs did not obtain amongst us. Now aud *gain the faree of bringing some old woman retailer, or effeminate man offender of the same kind to justice, is committed; but the wholesale vendor who does a theu- sand times as much injury to the country, because, I ween, he isa man cf inf:uence, is allowed to ply his nefarious calling un- The trial, too, of these law- breakers, which is too often much more lixe a ludicrous play than of a legal pro- cess of stern justice—consisting, generally, of a series of postponements until the case is finally dismissed—bespeaks much. The ordinary hearer smiles as he listens, and as he listens he thinks—thinks if those who sit in judginent were put on the stand and the truth evoked, many a tale of thrilling interest would be told of law-breaking ii high places. Now, what avails eny law if it remains a dead letter upon’ the statute book? The Scott Act, though defective as vegards the machinery for its enforcement, if used in accordance witu its utility and power for overthrowing this crying evil, would un- questionably remedy this lamentable and shameful state of affairs. It has done good service. For seme three months, at one time, liquor could scarcely’ be obtained within the limits of the city. Why the change? During that time the Tem- peranee Alliance, acting under the wise and energetic counsel of their worthy head, who has since passed away, were most vigorous in the discharge of their duty. The clergy of all denomin- ations, hurled their thunderbolts without stint and without mcrey, and al! seemed to jact ae if the grand old cause of temperance demanded theit§ noblet efforts —but why ithe change’ Why the lethargy’ Why ithe indifference? Why the nonsense im i reference to temperance candidates, in the way it was undertaken? Surely not owing |to politics, ete. Monthly deliverances to the police, ‘no matter how eloquent and power- | ful, will not avail, {if they,— ‘both the magistrate and the police— , be not God-fearing men and haters of un- righteousness. Thanking you for your kindness in ‘Teacher. Senator Scott and the Government (St. John Sui.) The report that Sir John A. had offered a seat in the cabinet to Hon- Senator Scott lacks confirmation. The Premier might do a worse thing than to make the proposition, and the Senator could scarcely do a better thing than to en- tertain the suggestion if it should be made tohim. It is known that Hon. Frank Smith is not desirous of remaining in goveruament. Mr. Scott has been regarded as the opposition leader in the Senate, but of late he has been one of the opposition members who do not fiercely oppose the policy of the government. As a member of the Mackenzie government he was charac- terized by industry and cautiousness. He was a minister under Mr. Blake when the latter was premier of Ontario, and secretary of state under Mackenzie when the latter was premier of Canada. He seems to have so far accepted the principles of these statesmen and maintained them that the present position of Edward Blake, the Rielite, is not satisfactory to him.
