MacArthur In the north-east of Scotland bits of rowan-tree and woodbine. used to be hung over the doors of the cattle sheds on May Day to keep the witches from milking the cows. But some farmers preferred to tie the wood to the animals tails. The Highlanders of Scotland be- lieve that May Day Eve. the witch- es roam about in the shape of hares and suck the milk from the cows. To prevent this most. farm- ers put tar behind the catt.le's ears and at the root of the tail, and the home was decorated with rowan-tree. Crossing to the isle of Man on May Day we find rural folk carry- ing crosses of rowan in their hats and bunches of Maytlowers over their doors as a protection against elves and witches. The women folk believed that a May Day dew serv- ed a dual purpose. namely: to bring good complexlons, and im- munity from witches. Another famous witch-catching device used among these superstit- ious people was to cut branches from a thorn tree and place them on the threshold of the cattle barn. The witches would get. tang- led up in the thorns until daylight when they lost their power. The changeable weather which we are at present experiencing doesn't bother anyone around here except the rink committee. It seems they just get a good layer of ice on the rink during a cold spell when an unseasonablc tem- perature comes along and they are nearly where they started again. Despite the weather. however. they managed to get all the lines down during the past week and this helps a great deal in referee- ing the games which are held in t-he rink, All in all. the rink cem- mittce is doing a good job of pro- viding a good ice surface.
