Our fellow-sul- | jects are the victims of gross uppression in | the Transvaal. Robbed, threatened and de- | prived of civil liberties in distinc: violation | of the Convention and of right, they have | called upon the Mother Land to intervene and to secure the redress of their wrongs. No British subject, in the right, applies to Britain in vain; and the case of these people has been taken up, with the result, not merely that relief bas been refused, but that new outrages have been perpetraied, and that the neighboring portions of the British Empire are in danger of armed in~ vasion. Australia and New Zealand have already come to the defence of British intereste, and to the protection of British | lives and British territory. They need no | urging. Nor should we. Let our Goveru- ment then bestir itself, and let it be seen that when one part of the Empire is assail~ ed ail are assailed, and all are equally ready to come to the help of the endanger- ed member. oo oe MURRAY HARBOR DISTRICT. — — — THE opposition candidate in the Murray Harbour district is Mr. A. P. Prowee. We commend the electofs who have brought into the field this talented and prudent manvf business, Such men are the more needed at this juocture when the necessity of keeping down the public debt—uow enlarged to the sum of abou: $600,000.00 —and the taxes is urgent. o-oo MURRAY HARBOR DISTRICT. Mr. Prowse in the Field---Unanim- ously Nominated at a Full Con- vention. At the Liberal Conservative Convention held yesterday in Murray River, Mr. A. P. Prowse was unanimously chosen to con~ test the district in Opposition to Attorney- Genera] McKinnon. The meeting was a large and representa- tive one, and a ful] quota of delegates was present from every poll. Unbounded en- thusiasm prevailed throughout the pro: ceedings. Rousing speeches were made by Alexan~ der Martin, Esq., M. P., M. McKinnon, \eq., M. L. A., Angus MeLeod, Esq., M. P. P., and the candidate. Three ringing cheers for the Conserva- tive Party,Alexander Martin, Heq., and the candidate were given; after which :he meets ing adjourned. Ladies drop in and see our new mantle department ; all the newest and brightest things in the market are on exhibition there. —Prowse Bros. 3i. | © Sa and sleep on —Apropos of the French boycott of the Riviera during the coming winter, (careful caiculations show that 270,000 people visit those regions during the sea- son. They ependabout £15,000,000, for ; the majority are rich and luxury-loving. The British contribute £5,000,000, the ; French £4,000 000, whilst the remainiog £;,000,000 is spent by wealthy Russians, Americans, Germans, Austrians, Belgians, Duteb, and a very few Italians. It is doubtful whether these figures will be at- tained this year, —La Patrie publishes a despatch from Ottawa eaying that the articlein the Mili- tary Gazette which states that the Govern- ment would not confer the command of a Canadian contingent on a Canadian is at- tributed to General Hutton, who, it says, ““muet be madeto understand that he is not the master of onr destinies.” The Geveral had better look out for himself. He musn’t dare to trench upon the pre- rogatives Or Mr. Tarte! Tarteis “ mas- ter,”—so long as Laurier reigns. Let that be fully understood. —Professor Angeli, the celebrated por- trait painter, who is the Queen’s favourite artist, bas just completed a portrait of Her Majesty. He says that during the sittings she had letters, newspapers, and state docu- ments read aloud to her by Prince Beatrice, and that her mental and physical energy seemed to be marvellous. Her Majesty is, by-the-bye, a very good sitter and an easy subject forthe portrait painter. Professor Angeli has been commissioned by the Queen to paint the portraits of Mr. Cecil Rhodes and Lord Kitchener, as two of thie most distinguished subjecte. —_- ESTEEMFD EXCHANGES Boston Globe : Taey call us a nation ot spendthrifte, and yet we cannot “ raise the wind” for even an international yacht race. Montreal Gazette: We have the men we have the pluck; we have the money too. Bat we do not have the Govern-~ ment that knows an Imperial opportanity when it sees it. Lord Wolseley, Sir Evelyn Wood and Sir Redvers Buller are of the opinion that there will be no hostilities. The impres-~ son holds good in some quarters that the big force will go out, and that on such a demopstration the Boers will give in. This inveterate military habit of understanding the Boers is criminal'y imprudent. To this mustbe attributed most of our South African disasters. Bos'on Globe: We mav all rejoice that something promises to be done in the Philippines now. Dewey’s advice with the president is law. The sending of three ships to Manila shows it. Otis, too, may ere long be superseded. The ad- ministration is evidently frightened at the commanding presence of the man who can be president if he wishes to be. Let us be thankful for this. We may have to wait for the reat. ee NEWS NOTES.
