They then threw little Dick into the River, tied the two youngest girla together and threw them iu, then tereed the oldest girl, and beat ber over the head firmities.—Before the discovery of these remedies, many cases of sores, ulcers, Ac., werespronounced to be hopelessly ineurable, because the treatment pursued tended to destroy the strength it was in- competent to preserve, and to exasperate the symptoms it was inadequate tu remove. The crime for which this severe punishment the prisuner, named Ryan, belonged. The evi- dence of his intention to commit the deed was his having his piece loaded, and his own adinission. We also learn that he had borne agood character 2 the regiment, and that the sergeaut-major bad done nothing to excite bis anger. The only complaint lodged syainst him by the which he would have been entitled to his dis- charge.—Quebee Daily News, Aug. 13. —_-- ‘Coloniet’ says: —“ We learn that the creps throughout the country are very promising. All mea kaow Wal in the eatire range of science, there is nothing s» difficult, ao delicate, and sw far trom the knowledge of the seusea of the chaste student bound to study it, as the science of the couacience. “ “Tis conscience that wakes cowards of us all; aud “ the just mao suffers seveu times a day” from its abnormal tendencies. How, then, are men to study this science with a vew te cure! The medical man has other certain evidences thaa those affurded by the con- fession of his patient ae indications by which to be guided; but the “ Confessor” haa none. This latter ueeds, therefore, a nwre mivute insight into the mysteries of cause aud effect, us well ou this acevuut ax because of the far more difficult pa- tare of the case and bis own easeutial unacquain- tanee with the evil. This seievee, therefore, has been presented to bim io the fauuliar shape of dialogue between two hy ical characters, not fur his imitation in the Confessional, but to supply him with a vad — view of every difficulty arising there and the in- dex to spiritual guidance—where questions cannot be or answered. Now these hypothetical questions, wrested from their sense and measing, have been published by our press aa if uctually asked and answered in the Catholic Confessionals, and Catholic ladies Lave been shocked at this, as well they vught.
