Parnell, after the death of ty Gavin, which occurred at Barbadoes in June last, from yellow fever. Mr. Finlayson was mate of the vessel at the time, and on the death of the captain he took eommand and brought her safely to Halifax. The watch is a very handsome exe, and bears the following in scription: Presented {by M. Fo.sy to WILLIAM FINLAYSON, for his good management ef Brigantine Parnell, after death of Gaprain Micuaet Gaviy, at Barbadoes, Juve Sth, 1881. PoraTors are coviing into the city very slowly to-day, and prices raage from 45 to 50 eents. Advices of the 22nd inst., from Boston to the St. John papers state that “‘tne de- mand for potatees continue only moderate there but the cargo prices remain pretty firm. Something nice in Boulton rose stock will bring $1 per bushel by the carlead, but 0c. and 95c. will cover the general run of eastern stock, both rose and prolifics. The qnality now coming forward is complained of as small ia size, as compared with former years. A despatch of the 23rd, from Yarmouth, N. §., to the Halifax Herald reports that ‘‘ The steamer ‘Dominion’ sailed for Bos- ton at midnight with a large cargo, principally of potatoes. She was com- pelled to leave 800 _ barrels behind, being unable tea earry them. Yarmouth was flooded yesterday with teams from various parts of the country loaded with potatoes. As much as seventy eents ner bushel was paid in cash. This is the highest price ever known here. The crop was not a good one and the large quantity exported wiil create a potate famine this winter. Many farmers sold for sixty to seventy cents per bushel cazh, in the hope of buying P. E. Island potatoes later im the fall fer thirty or forty cents. But this is where they have madeamistake. The Islard will not send a potato to local markets. It is believed that one dollar per bushel will be the price here all winter.” Just rEcatvep at L. E. Lonpen, Oct. 23. The meeting in Trafalyar Square, last evening, te express indignation at Parnell’s arrest, was a failure owing to the rain; there were only about 1,000 persens pre- sent, and, after considerable hustling, re- solutions condemning the Gevernment’s aetion were formally declared carried. The indiguation meeting in Hyde Park te-day was attended by over 60,000 per- sons. Tho speeches were of the usual vielent character—and were delivered frem six platforms. The principal speakers were Messrs. Barry, O'Donnell and Finnegan, Home Rule members of Parliament, and Messrs. Clarke and Hyndeman and Miss Craijen cennected with the Londen Demo- cratic Association. Resolutions denouncing the cowardly and lawless action ef the coercion government in attempting forcibly to suppress freedom of speech, were unanimously carried. The names ‘‘ Judas Gladstene” and ‘‘ Quaker Bright,” especially the latter, was greeted with groans and sheuts of ‘‘ traitors.” EUROPE AND THE EAST. Cairo, Ost. 23.
