DR. AYERS Patnless Fxtractioa of Teeth Ib THE DAILY EXAMINER, CHARLOTTETOWN, AUGUST 2, 1898 | REMARKABLE SHOOTING. Killing Four Caribous Out ef Five at Long Distances, A party of four of us left Bath for tha apper part of Maine for a four days’ hunting trip. There was one mun among ns, Orderly Sergeant Richardson, U. 8S. A., at Fort Popham, Me., still in the service. On the third morning three of us—-the sergeant, another and myself— left camp together in search of game, the snow falling thick, but calm; no wind. We had not gone more ‘hana mile from camp when we saw on the next ridge (a hillside) five caribous standing in such an open place that it was almost impossible to get nearer to them withont being seen. After a wait ef some time for them to change their position, that we might advance and get a shot of more certainty, our silence was broken by the sergeant’s remark that he had killed deer as far away as that, and thought he could kill one of these. We all agreed to jet him take a shot and estimated the distance at 500 yards. When he got in his position, which he calls the Texas grip, and selecting the one on the right told us to look out for him, at the crack of his rifle, to my great surprise, down came the animal with his back broken. The others, being bewildered, ran in a circle like, coming to a standstill somewhat nearer to us— all hands estimated 450 yards. Again he selected the one on the right, and at the crack of the gun again the animal dropped, shot through the heart. The { other three leaped off in another dirée- tion, as we estimated, 600 yards. Then the sergeant adjusted his sights to that distance, and to my great surprise he killed the third one. The other two sep- arated and oue of them came back near to the first one that was shot, when he stood broadside to us, and the sergeant fire?, but shot low and broke both front legs just above the knee. After a little skirmishing about in the brush we found him, and one more shot from the old springfield rifle, with the sergeant behind it, gave us four out of five cari- bous and only five shots fired, and by only one man at that. We went into camp with flying colors and were the center of attraction that evening. One of the party inquired of the ser- geant where he had obtained such profi- ciency in marksmanship, when he pulled his coat open and exhibited « splendid gold badge from the army, a distin- guished marksman’s medal, won by him in 1889 in tae division competition ef the army, department of the east. Our party were on this hunt for several days and killed stx deer, two elks and four caribous, of which Sergeant Rich- ardson killed four caribous, three deer and one elk, and he killed them all over 800 yards, except one deer, which hs shot on tae run and about 150 yards’ distance, breaking its meck.—J. The deadly work at Manila was gen- erally performed in the eceol of the morning. That these events were fully appreciated was shown by the presence on tie Lunetta of thousands of people. Hundreds of fashionably dressed ladies and gentlemen ‘‘graced’’ the occasion with their presence. For the most part these fashionables came in their equip- ages. These lad:es would stand in their vehicles, determined not to miss any part of the ghastly show. The signal from the commanding lieutenant that the victims were dead was the signal for these delighted lady spectators to wave their handkerchiefs or parasols as evidence of their satisfaction. As a general thing these were fright- fully grewsome affairs. There was a fir- ing squad of five for each unfortunate. This squad of executioners would be stationed about ten paces immediately to the rear of their human target. In most instances the soldiers constituting the firing squad were natives. They were secretly in favor of the rebellion, and no member of the squad cared to fire the fatal shot. Consequently each man would aim for the arm or leg. This of course only added to the horror of the affair. There was one occasion when 13 lead- ing members of the secret revolutionary society, the Catapunan, were executed. There was not a single instance t this execution where the unfortunase was killed by the first volley. In a majori- ty of cases three or four volleys were required, and in one instance five vol- leys were fired before the surgeon de- clared the man dead. The announcement that all were dead was the signal for music by the band—gay, triumphal music.—Review of Reviews. The Needle and the Splinter, In discoursing to a wornan’s club re- cently a physician, dwelling upon how to treat children’s bruises, told of a simple method to sterilize a needle that was to be used to pick out a splinter or other foreign substance often jabbed into small boys’ hands or knees through their reckless falling. If the needle is passed through an alcohol flame or boil- ing water and used without touching the point with the fingers, it is safe. The average mother thinks if she uses a needle instead of a pin she has con- ceded all that is required of her, but the surgeon, keen to the dangers of germ contamination, knows that a step fur- ther is necessary. The lecturer also spoke of the value in the mother’s medicine chest of a lit- tle gutta percha tissue such as every one who has hada tooth filled will recog- nize. This will be found to be of great service in covering any moist dressing of wounds, as it protects the clothing from the wet and also retains the mois- ture which it is needed to preserve in the dressing.—New York Post. An Old View of the Spaniard. Let us see what that acute observer and profound thinker Francois de la Mothe le Vayer said about the Span- iards of the eighteenth century: ‘‘They are melancholy, treacherous, inhospita- ble, miserly, superstitious, importunate in their courtesy, but constant, deter- mined, taciturn, admirable foot sol- diers, enduring hunger, thirst, all the fatigues of war, accomplishing by the head rather than the hand and gaining more by ruses and stratagems than by open force. * * * The Spaniard is cour- teous, at the start, contenting himself with remarking quietly all that which is of value in a place, but his leave tak- ing is terrible, because it is then that he strikes, pillaging and laying waste without mercy.’’-—Brston Journal. The Perils of a Critic. Robert Southey was saved from the danger into which his vocation as a critic threw him on|y by his anonymity. The Famous Damascus Sword. It is but seldom that a real good specimen of the Damascus sword can be obtained, for the art of working and engraving this kind of steel is dead. These swords are made of alternate lay- ers of iron and steel, so finely tempered that the blade would bend to the hiit without breaking. The weapons had edges so keen that nocoat of mail could resist them and surfaces so highly pol- ished that when a Moslem wished to rearrange his turban he used his sword for a looking glass. Luxury. Luxury would not be desired by any of usif we saw clearly the suffering which accompanies it in the world.
