oR ma oe. a 2 gg Sey nin ale ao . +. —— a a THE FOUR SPANTAKDS. (Con cluded.) As evening approached, 1 saw the land, It would be dark ere we would reach it; and thus far all went hopeful- ly. Yet never had the blood-staing upon the brig’s deck looked more hid- eous than now. Hope had in & meéas- ure broken the nightmare of horror, and. more fully than before [ realized the awfulness of the tragedy which had been perpetrated. [Bh remy, Strongly the north-easter pipeu—it would not fail me now—and the clouds were thick and the night would be very dark. Then upon the lee bow gleamed a light .and preseatly away. off the weather bow shone faintly another. Oh, the anxiety of that moment! I was right. There they were, the two beautiful lights—yes, beautiful indeed to me. But the hour of greatest peril was at hand; and like a dramati¢ auth- or who fears for his last act, 1 studied again and again the various contingen- cies that might cross my plans, and re- veal my intentions to the murderous Spaniards. We pussed between the lights at a considerable distance from both, and many were the inquiries of the pirates as to our position. I told them that we had but a few miles further to run, and then we should have reached the anchorage at the watering place. Darkness prevented them from seeing the land, and they had not the most distant idea oftheir surroundings. The lights they imagined to be upon two islands—at least they took my word for it, and had no suspicion of our real whereabouts. On and on flew the Isabel; and if ever, at one time more than another, I have tried to exert my nautical judg- ment and forethought, it was then. We-saw other lights; but the pirates supposed them to be upon the ocean coast, along which they believed them- selves sailing. At length I requested to take im the light sails. and. the courses. This completed I ealled out— and it was with a dreadful thrill at my heart, I assure you,—‘Let go the top- sail halyards, and clew up!” It was dore; and I could see that a dark bank was rising under the lee bow. “Stand by to let go anchor,” I shouted, “while I bring her up in the wind !” I clapped the helm hard down, while the four pirates ran to obey my last direction. Oh, heaven! how my blood scemed to suffocate me! They were all away forward. It mustbe now if ever. A hundred times a day I glanced at the yawl, and the tackles that held it; and now, fquickly, but with a steady hand, 'I sprang to thedavits-fall. First the larboard, then the starboard, Iseized ; but was careful to lower away both simultaneously, thatthe boat might not be swamped. Then, clapping my hands on the taffrail, I dropped into her, un- hooked the rrackles, and with my hands against the brig, pushed with a force that sent the yawl shooting from under th counter. At this moment, I heard the | anchor go overboard. I had just time to grasp an oar,‘and commence sculling with all my might when the pirates ran aft. Bacalardo’s tone rang fierce and loud. His horrid Spanish oaths might at another time have curled my blood; but now I had him upon the hip. *“Ahoy the fort!” I shouted ; ~ ahoy there the fort!” For well i knew the dark bank so close at hand, The voice thet answered was the most blessed sound I ever heard. It was from one of the United States’ sentinels, and | was wliding under the wall at old Point Comfort! Eseape for the pirates was im- possible, for the strong easterly wind must preclude all hope of getting to sea, while the fort could have disabled the brig in an instant. A boat, with armed soldiers, now boarded her. Three ot the pirates were taken into custody, but Baca- lardo was found dead in the cabin. Dis- may, disappointment, and the certainty of his doom, had impelled him to draw his Spanish kuife across his throat. The others, when brought to trial, had the ef- frontery to profess themselves innocent. Becalardo had duped them—Bacalardo had done_all—they had injured no one ; but the United States Court thought dif- F ferently, and they were hung at Norfolk. -_——__-___—_——- o- <p eae - A relation between the rainfall of Brazil and the maximum and minimum sun-spot periods, similar to that pointed out by Dr, W.. The Greatest Medical Discovery since the Creation of Man, or since the Commencement of the Christian Era. There never has been a time when the heal- ing of so many different diseases has neen eaused by outward application as the present. it.is an undisputed fact that over half of the entire population of the globe resort to the use of ordinary plasters. Dr. MELVIN’s CapsicuM Porous PLASTERS are acknowledged by all who have used them. to act quicker than any other plaster they ever before tried, and that one of these plasters will do more real service than @ hundred of the ordinary kind. All other plasters are slow of action, and require to be worn continually to effect a cure; but with these it is entirely dif- ferent: the instant one is applied the patient will fee) its effect. Physiciansin all ages have thoroughly tested and well know the effect of Capsicum; and it has always been more or less used as a medical agent for an outward application; but it is only of very recent date that its advan- tages ina porous plaster have been discovered. Being, however, convinced of the wonderful cures effeeted by Da. MELVIN’S CAPSICUM Porous PLasters, and their superiority over all other plasters, they now actually prescribe them, in their practice, for such diseases as rheumatism, in the side and baek, and all such as have required the use of plasters or liniment. After you have tried other plas- ters and liniments, and they have failed, and you want a certain cure, ask your druggist for Dr. MEvvrn’s CAPSICUM POROUS PLASTER. You ean hardly believe your own convictions of its wonderful effects. Although powerful and quick in its action, you can rely on its safety for the most delicate person to wear, as it is free from lead and oiber poisonous material commonly used in the manufacture ef ordin- ary plasters. One trial is a sufficient guarantee of its merits, and one plaster will gell hundreds to your friends. Ask your druggist for DR. MBLYVIN’s CAPsI- CUM PoRoUs PLASTER, and take no other; or, on receipt of 25 cents for one, $1 for five, or $2 for a dozen, er wil be mailed, post paid, to any address in the United States or Canadas, MANUFACTURED BY THE ~ NOVELTY PLASTER WORKS Lowell, Mass., U.S. A., G.
