THE UPEI SUN,Thursday,Jan.25,19791paqe ll FACULTY STATUS BIG ISSUE BUSINESS As many of the students and professors of this institution know there has been and will continue to be a great deal of discussion concerning the business administration department receiving faculty status. The professors in Kelley have been outlining proposals and reasming about why they feel they should became an independent group and it seems the students are now beginning to stand up and voice their opinions. I myself wish that when I entered this school the department was a faculty because it would have benefited me over my four year stay. How, you ask? The business depart— ment would be receiving added funds and would not have to take a slice of the arts pie. This means we would have additional professors who could teach us in a wider variety of Hello 2 Business student . pleasant surroundings. government agencies . a. M If interested. 1 Manager. I think it is tine that administrative staff and (all other employ— ees of this university start to realize the accatplishments that are taking place in Kelley and will continue‘todo so. For those of you who don't know,’ the graduating accounting majors from UPEI have 100% success rate when it cares time to write their C.A. exams. This is, of course, a credit to the program at UPEI This year we have, 365 students enrolled in the program and have only eight professors which means the Students have to do quite a bit to get to see their prof. The gentlemen we have in Kelley do everything in in their power to see each student is treated fairly. At the moment each prof- essor has a heavy load and this means they have no time to offer e ves. To have faculty status would mean we would have representatives on all important committees involved in decision making. This would definitely mean that with a voice in the decision making process the business department would benefit. I feel we deserve this distinction because the department has accomplished a great deal with what the university gives them to work with. The Seniors in I Business have job offers galore which is not what the other faculties can say. With faculty status, we could be that much better. As it stands today, if an important issue arises by the time it goes through the proper channels, it is choked to death in red tape. With faculty status our chairman Walter would be sitting on decision- making committees and he could initiate activity. The business department is proud to say that they have graduates spread throughout Canada holding very important jobs. The program is successful but can be that much better. Can you imagine if this department was down at Holland College? Where would this institution be without 365 of its students? The school has the poten— tial to get recognition throughout Eastern Canada for its business program but it has to start to let the professors who work day in and day out with the students start to make the decisions which are best for everyone involved in the department. With the university undergoing a restructuring phase I feel it would be appropriate that the new president make Business a faculty- Brian Gaudet President Business Society
