The truth probably is that the Grit lead- ers in the Maritime Provinces have brought Mr. Mackenzie down in the hope that his speeches would help to bolster up a falling cause, They know that there is general dissatisfaction with the results of ‘Re, form” Government. ‘hey find their fol- lowers deserting them on every hand, They confess to a scarcity of talent in their own ranks, such talent as is needed to make even a presentable case for popular consideration. In their despair their eyes turned to Mr. Mackenzie, and as the Grit leaders in the West appear to admit that their majority in the next Parliament must come from the Maritime Provinces (!) the Premier has not unwillingly responded to their call, So they-kave had him in Sum- merside, in Souris, in Charlottetown and in Jerwick, and he will probably speak in Halitax, Truro and Fredericton. ‘I'hus far his appearances bave been utter failures. His manner does not inspire enthusiasm. Badly off as the party is in talent in the Maritime Provinces, it possesses more ats tractive speakers than Mr. Mackenzie. His style is hard and coarse, He is no orator in the true meaning of the word. His matter is even less attractive than his nunner, His addresses thus far have con- tained nothing new. He has simply given a rehash of old stories and stock argus ments ; he has not added a fresh fact or suggestion to the political dish which be perpetually sets before his hungry audit» ors. He has convinced nobody, and the glamour of mystery and sham popularity which once surrounded the *selfmade man” has been rude- ‘ly but utterly dispelled, never to res ‘turn, . The Alexander Mackenzie who ad- dresses the people of the Maritime Prov- inces;is- not the, Alexander Mackenzie ot ld. That Mackenzie was a patriotic gen- tlemen who breathed an atmosphere’ of He was. a yeiy great ‘‘ Keformer.’’ Ile promised to reform the public life of Canada. He assured all who would listen to him,—and he had three millions of people for auditors and w:tnesses of his promises—that if he at- tained to power he would introduce a new mode of government which would bring prosperity and a benign rule to the people, and exhibit Canada as a country blessed in the possession of a Government which wouid need the support neither of God nor man, but would stand in tho strength ot 1 is Mackenzie is accord- same man. — the. r Provinces Hy Sted of men who have conspicuous failures as the heads ofp ic departments. Whatever blunders it Wa8 possible for public men to perpetrate shave been guilty of. Claiming an ability to perform wonders, they hive ptoved their inability to do anything right. Among his blundering colleagues he stands conspicuous for the recklessness and the giant measure of his individual incapacity Ine brains of his party, he exemplities all their worst qualities, their dissimulat‘on, greed of office and intinite political dishon- esty. As the worst type of the worst party that ever rose to rule in a free country, the Premier is now pretty thoroughly unders stcod in the Maritime Provinces. There is no longer any charm in his voice or seduc- tion in his policy. Go where he may, be greeted by as many of his appointees to office as he may please to gather around him, he has no_hoid on the popular heart, The party, its principles or want of princi- ple, its leaders, its organs, are detected and exposed. They have been weighed in the balanceand found wanting. They can deceive no longer. Ihe end of their career approaches,—and of this fact Mr. Mackenzie will have li:ttle doubt when he comes to reflect upon the demoralizition of his party in the Maritime Province.— Moncton Times. _—_-_-- —> or aD -o o-———__—_——- UNITED STATES. Yesterday's news (the I(th) includes the following items :—Hawkers of newspapers at Coms plegne were recently required to furnish lists Of newspapers they furnished to cuss tomers in the arrondisement. The Union Liberate of Versailles was sentenced to 3,009 franes line, and the manager imprisoned for three months for insulting President Macmahon. The Nineteenth Century and Petit Pavrisier were prosecuted for publishing a colored map of France showing the political com- plexion of the depsriments, the offence declared against them being the unauthor. ized publication of a drawing. The Deprehe, % newspaper at Toulouse, has been tined 100 franes forrefusing to print a speech ot President MacMahon. On the other band, the tribunial of Nevers and Carcassone have declared themselves competent to try actions by the newspapers against the Prefects for preventing the street sale thereof, The Minister of Agriculture has asked the Pres fects ina circular ‘etter to remind em. ployees of the Depaiiment of A gricultue that it is their duty not to attempt to thwart the action of the Cabinet, or place at the service of hostile parties the in. fluence they derive from their offices. The Paris Police have forbidden street sales of the photographs of Thiers. The papers 80,000 copies of the eques- trian portraits of President MacMahon are tobe distributed in the provinces. The offence of speaking insultingly of Mac- Mahon in the streets is now becoming the subject of daily action before the courts. Letevre Durfle, who may be said to have originated this offence, was condemned to two months’ imprisonment, but succeeded on appeal in reducing the term to 15 days, “ ix a son of a former Bonapartist Sena. or. —_—_—_—_—_—_——_—— ————$—— 7 . The Press in France, —The liberty of the Press in France seems likely to be pretty well stamped out under McMahon's regmie, The difference between the Imperialism of the late Emperor and the Republicanism of the present President is not very apparent. Two or three men and various dogs hay~ ing been devoured by sharks off Melbourne, Australia, the Government offered a rex ward for the capture of these fish, and three thousand were caught in one week; but inasmuch as the reward was at the rate of one shilling a foot, and no reward is given for sharks under two feet, the fishermen threw the “ babbies’” into the sea uhtil they grow worth catching. Whenever they got liberty they rushed to the pig’s troughs and ravenously eat the putrid ofial. The Su. perintendent was a Plymouth Brother in religious belief.
