I951 Fair Week In liotrospoct As Premier Jones admitted on Mondav night, this week's Provincial Fair mlghl perhaps be bettered by the Canadian Na- tional at Toronto. but it is doubtful if one could find a suitable comparison elsewhere The Calgary Stampede may be all very well, but who among our legion of harness racing fans would exchange the excitement of a close finish down the homestretch for all the broncho busting that the West can offer? The Old Home Week racing in Charlottetown has been steadily gaining in popularity until today (to again quote the Premier) it is not a question of attracting bigger crowds here but of transpollmf. them to and from the Province. That PP0b' lem will have to be solved with better roads. ferries and rail connections. and on its solution also will depend our future de- velopment agriculturallj.', industrially and otherwise. The big Fair attracted some of the finest livestock entries in Canada, partic- ularly in the dairy cattle and swine classes. and set new standards this year which will prove of great future value to the Prov- ince. It was pleasing to note the man) veteran Island showmen who have been scoring year after year and are still able to give pointers to the younger generation in quality breeding, but who nevertheless found this year's competition the keenest in their experience. The work they are doing is profitable not only to themselves in the prize money and publicity. received, but to every breeder in the Province. A matter of gratification also was the increase in the handicraft and other ex- hibits under the auspices of the Women's institutes, who cannot be too highly com- mended for reviving this important feature of the Exhibition, and who in time will is of the home grown variety and not im- posed by Russian power politics. 0 O 5 Tomorrow, the thirteenth Sunday after Trinity. Last Day of Old Home Week and the Provincial Exhibition. 0 1 A return to normal will not be prac- ticable in our way of life till after Labour day. in Western Canada it is usually a case of too much or too little wheat; this year the surfeit has it. D O Charlottetown welcomes the veterans of the 8th Heavy -AA. Battery meeting here for their first post-war reunion. O O I Argentina is facing critical shoitages of meat just now, an achievement of econ- omics even more impressive than our own butter shortage. Country youngsters now have nothing to detract them from school except shoot- ing, fishing, ball games. harvesting, potato picking and. of course, their usual chores. , I I 0 One complication of having as success- ful an Exhibition as this week's is that customers for Island livestock will cer- tainly not be satisfied with anything but the best. 0 Lord John Russell. First Earl of Rus- sell, was born this date 1792, the third son of the sixth Duke of Bedford. He he- came a Member of Parliament for about thirty-five years, in and out of office. His constant aim was reform and his name is associated with many political, soc-ial'and economic changes. 9 O I O Q The Royal Air Force is beginning trials this summer with a new process for air- craft storage which is based on the use of a plastic "cocoon" of airtight, weather- tight, temperature-tight skin. It is claim- ed that planes wrapped up in this skin can be stored in the, open for periods ranging up to a number of yeais. I O 6 There is something disturbing about the report that the Historic Sites and Monu- ments Board of Canada is sponsoring a study to correct inaccuracies in the story of the Riel rebellion of 1885. Coming so bring it to equal and even surpass anything previously shown in this con- nection. The Exhibition management and offic- 'iais showed themselves highly competent in their duties, many favorable comments being heard on the smooth working of the various track and show-ring events. Thi- spick-and-span appearance of the grounds. the fine modern stables. cattle barns and other plant equipment, also came in for commendation. We might add to this a tribute to the police and traffic officers whose courtesy and efficiency were noted apprcciativcly by many visitors. It has been a big week for everybody, and all who helped to make it a success from Manager Kennedy and his co-direct- ors rlown. have reason to take a bow.
