8 Theatre Society News With only six rehearsals remaining before opening night, the cast and crew of The Three Cuckolds are putting their noses to the grindstone to ensure that no detail is overlooked. Gregson Winkfield, our guest director this semes- ter, brings a vast knowledge of the stage to our Theatre Society, as well as the ability to coax every last ounce of creative energy out of his cast. The Three Cuckolds, modelled on the Ren- aissance Italian commedia dell'arte style of theatre, is a physical slapstick com- edy with many complicated scenes that verge on choreography and require very precise and polished direction. Winkfield and his cast are not the only members of this production who are putting in long hours. An important element of The Three Cuckolds are the costumes, which are done in renaissance style, but in technicolor. In charge of the mammoth job of costuming this production is Sue Ann Holloway, who designed and tailored many of the pieces herself: Holloway has also created several comedic masks in the tradition of the commedia dell'arte. The set design and construction is in the creative hands of Joy Tremblay and Ron Quesnel respectively, who have developed an imaginative and original set. In contrast to the costumes, it is basically black and white, and almost cartoon-like, with several different levels for the actors to play on. Samantha Connolly, who is in charge of props for the production, has also had to exercise her imagination over the past few weeks, with great results. Who knew what could be done with pipe insulators and dryer hoses? As interesting as all this sounds, it must be seen to be believed. The Three Cuckolds will be presented from Friday, March 29 to Sunday, March 30 at the Carrefour Theatre. So, for a rare chance to witness the commedia dell’ arte in performance and for a really good laugh, mark these dates on your calen- dar.
