Steail, writing from Constantinople, gives a graphic pic- ture of what an American college arid American missionaries ' have uc- complislied and are accoinplisliing in the Ottoman Empire. He thinks Britain has done little in tliiit quar-5 ter since the Crimean war, and that one of the most important- and benc- iicent effects of that war was that it Opened a. large territory as a tield for American missions and educational in- stitutions, which, Low.-ver, Britain has powerfully aided in protecting. Foremost among the educational in- fluences apart from the missions, has been the work of Roberts College at Constantinople. 'i`hirty~four years ago two Ameri- cans “with lieads on their shoulders,” by means of this institution set about teaching A merican methods to the youth of the East. They have taken no hand in politics and have not identified themselves with any sect or creed. They have simply insisted that every youth within their walls oe trained in American principles, moral development and spiritual discipline. They teach them live languages and the principles of' free government. The American college, says Mr. stead, is the chief hope for the future of the millions wlo inhabit the Sul- tan’s dominions. They have 200 students _in t-he college to-day, but they have trained and sent out into’ the world thousands of bright, brainy young fellows, who have carried the leaven of the American town meeting into every province of the Ottoman empire. He proceeds io show that it was from the leaven that was placed by Roberts College that the _Bulgarian principality was lefivened When the constitution of Bulgaria as _a free st-ate was fi.-rmcd it wa.-i the f iiduatt-s of Roberts Colleve that "ave 8" s s _it democratic character. Today Peollcrts College graduate is Prime Minister of Bulgaria, another is Bul- gal ian Minister to Constantinople and as third is Biiigmian Blinister at Ath- ens. In fact the college has been the great nuriery of liulgaiiiiii statesiiien. American missioii-s, Mr. Stead tells, and the college are now doing about all that is being done for humanity in Asiatic Turkey. Of late :lic British churches are waking up to their duty in regard to Asia. Minor, but down to a recent date_bey0nd the British government extending protection by “its corisuls and otiicialsto American -missionaries, little had been done by British agency in that part of the world. ~ ________‘_‘__i_Vhen General Mosselolf, the Dir- ector_ of Foreign Faiths within the Russia-r_i Ei`°npire, visited the border of Armenia not long ago the Armenian Patriarch spread before him a map of Asia Minor. which was marred an Over with American colleges.
