The consequences were that ersons who had ostensibly no means of she tering and accommodating travel- lers or their horses, were enabled by borrowin a suficiency of beds, and the loan ofa stable wit the required number of stalls, from sonic natured neighbours, to impose a is two easy or indolent Justices of Peace, to grant the cer- tificate required by law,and the houses when thus licensed, turned out as might be expected, dens of vice of every descri tion. In order to prevent improper persons rotn obtainin licen- ces, and to limit the number, the Gran Jury were entrusted wit the power of refusing licenses, unless they were satisfied that a house of the description contemplated by law was actually wanted in the situation where the party resides. So that instead of travelling out of the path cl‘ their duty in refusing licen- ces, they’but carry out the stringent provisions of the Act. in exercising a great degree of caution, first as to whether they will increase the number of licensed tavern-keepers, and secondly, prevent improper persons from ob- taining licences. Our readers will rceive, that all this tirade against two unolen ing members of the no of Temperance, is as unjust as it was uncalled for. It is highly amusing. however, to be told at this time of day, that “ Grand Juries have no lili- I or moral r on.u'l2r'It't_r/." Our ancestors thought othervrise, and we rather think thattheir descendants are of the same opinion that their father‘s were, at the institution of a body whose litical responsibilit bears the same propor- ion to the mdividua County they represent, that the House of Representatives bear to all the Counties in the aggro to, and whose moral responsibility is guards and enforced by the most solemn oath that could well be devised. The Cake table resented an unusually handsome appearance, being tastefully corated and enriched with every variety of that dslicacy,—one cake, in particular, a con- tribution from Mrs. Rigg, elicited universal admiration. This department, as mi ht be expected, contributed largely to the amount realized. The Coffee, likewise, being presided over by those who understood the thing had a perpetual run. With the proceeds, or as much thereof as possible it is in contemplation to D- O a pot ouse, or house of refuge, on a small scale ; which it is hoped, with the assistance of an annual Legislative Grant, may, after a time, be got into operation ; and thus to prevent that system of begging fromdoor door which tends so much to destroy all Christian Charity amongst us, because of the dilliculty that exists of ascertaining the immediate wants of the applicants, many of w om too readily take advantage of such a state of things. Perha s it is this which has caused some to say, " ave no r amongst us.” Yet if any one having this impression, would summon resolu- tion (for it is o ten a matter of much delicacy.) and would then ascertain, by personal inspec- tion and other available sources, the true state of many of our poor. such person's ideas woul probab y be considerably changed. At this inclement season many of the most deserving cannot come from their abodes to make appli- cation. Let us remember that though verty as well as misery, is occasionally, the o pring of vice, yet, that it is not always so,—therefore let us be grateful for our blessin , and that game whence it may, it surely smands our sympathy and aid. 5' MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT. Extract of a letter from a gentleman at Green's Shore. Mr. Thomas Robins jun., and sisters Ann and Mary, with ri Miss Johnston, from Margnte Road, were on a visit to a Mr. Proctors,, at Green’s Shore; they left at about half-pest ei ht o'clock on 'I‘ussduy evening. to return home to Eedcquo. At the time of their leaving the shore, it was snowing a little. and they lost the track, and drove out towards the harbour; the young man got out ofths sleigh. and was leading his horse by the bridle, when he suddenly walked into an opening in the ice, the sleigh upset, and they were all precipitated in the water. Robi thinks they were in the writer for helfan hour before any of them got out, the first who succeeded in getting on the ice, and then got his two sisters out, tried hard to save Miss Johstori. but before he could reach her, she sank out of sight. to rise no more. They then started for the shore, not knowing where they were going, and when they had walked about two miles, Ann Robins was unable to walk further, and they were obliged to leave her on the ice. The then saw a light in some of the houses at the whar , which served them as a guide, and when they reached Green's Sliere, Mary being also unable to walk, her brother was obliged to go to Mr. MeEwen’s to procure assistance to get her conveyed to the house; this was about 12 o'clock, p. m. An alarm was instnntl raised, and in a short time, about sixty men procee ed, in search of tlie|§oiher sister, but were unable to discover the body tilll after do light on Wednesday morning, when it was found rozen to death. They also found the body of Miss John- ston lloating in the water, close to the sleigh. Mary Robins is badly frozen, but is not considered danger- ously ill.
