Prof. Osuna is at the head of a party of six young Mexicana, whu having been graduated at normal schools in their own country, are seeking to ex- tend their knowledge of the art of teacb- jug by a full course at the Massachusetts State Normal School, at Bridgewater, near Boston. ‘*Eduoation is getting to be prized by our peopls,’’ he continued, ‘‘and we have in early all the states scbools for training teachers, the one at Vera Cruz being noted for ite excellent work. But the lack of good teachers is still keenly felt, and it was thought advisahle to send a party of young men tothe United States to learn the very best methods of pedagogy. If the experiment ts a euo- cess many others will come hereafter. These young men will not only learn to be good instructors, but they will also learn the English language, and gain, by contact with Americans, the broader education which is the product of a supertor environment. “American schoolmastera, who caDd speak Spanish, are very much ip de- mand in Mexico, but it matters oot how efficient a teacher may be if be can't talk the language of the natives he would be of littl use. Good teachers get about $1,900 a year in our country. Education fs free, and attendance of chil- dren is compulsory. “It was only by the hardest effort that our party was sble to carry out this undertaking, owing to the heavy ex- pense, as it requires about $2 io our money for §1 here in payment for board, books and tuition. However we feel that the two or three years we shall remain will make us better fitted to teach, and that our example will be followed by many others, so that eventually the youth ef our country will be able to get proper instruction without leaving home.”’ The Gentlemaa Tramp. A man stopped at a book cart in App street, Saturday, to look over the cheap paper editions that it contained. He picked up a copy of Les Miserables. As he did soa tramp touched him on the shoulder and said :— “I beg yor pardon, sir, purchase that for me.”’ A gruff “‘No’’ was the reply, but the tramp was not to be easily got rid of. “I enjoy reading, sir,’’ he said, ‘‘and have much lelsure time. The newspapers do not satisfy me. Their stories are not written by masters. They are superficial; they are not from the heart; they have no particular object in view. Hngo had no equals, and so no superiors."’ The tramp spoke hurriedly, as though unwilling to let his forced hearer escape his plea. He wanted the book, and to indicate that he was not of the lowest order of tramp, said: ‘‘To paraphrase Caesar, ‘Ali Gall ia divided into three parts-—-the bitterness of the world, of the flesh and of the devil.’ I have experi- enced the first, am experiencing the second and hope for something better shen the third. I am ao tramp, an outcast —you can see that—but I have been s gentleman—as the world uses the word —and at times I can momentarily for- get that I belong to the Brotherhood of Adversity. But even these moments are getting rarer and yet more rare. But why bother you with this? ‘*Purchase for me this cheap copy of ‘Les Miserables.’ Jean Valjean vas one of the brotherhood, Fantine was another; the book contains many others, and I wish to read it again. I have read it four times and have passed it on. I will do so again, for it contains much that by contrast makes an outcast's Mfe seem easy, and although you may doubt me, while to an extent it erobitters ua, it in the end elevates us, only to a slight de- gree it is true, but it has a beneficent effect, and that, no matter how alight, is something.’’ The man addressed, wishing to ter- minate the appeal, and heing mor or less impressed by the tramp's words aad manner, picked the volumes from the cart, paid for them, handed them to the tramp and walked away. The Fellow of the Brotherhood of Ad- versity said: ‘‘L am muoh obliged to you, sir. Humph! cannot even wait to be thanked fora kindly act because the beneficiary is a tramp. The gain in accuracy, with o corresponding di- minution of pain and danger, which this fact seems to insure, makes the dis- covery one whose ultimate benefits to the race it is hard to value. With all the <nowledge and appliances which solence has now placed at the disposal of the medical art, and the developments of which they are stili possible, the men and Women of the next century should possess almost physioal perfection. But evil ts too cunning and subtle a force to be completely baffled, and with all the new advantages it is probable that eter- nal vigilance will continue to be the price of good health in the future, as it has heen In the past. Communion With God. Worship is communion with God. Communion is that mysterious com- mingling of souls which makes them one, and gives to each the gifts of the other. We feel it in human love or friend- ship. It is deeper than words and larger than sympathy. It is the opening and giving of heart to heart. Thus we com- mune with God. He dwells in us and we in Him, The wortd fades away. Onr sorrows are fogottep. We are uplifted by new aspirations and holy impulses. Many valuable lives are saved by using Scott’s Emulsion as soon asa de ine in health is observed, THE WOMAN HATERS. A Curious Breed of Cranks That Specially Fleurteh in England. The art of woman hating has vnot reached the degree of perfection In this county it has in England. There the American visitor who delves into social customs and closely scrutiniazes the na- tional manners of life is amazed to find that there existe a race of woman haters whose creed, originating about the time of Thackeray and based upov many of his sayings has been reduced to prinoi- pies and by-laws. In England women have less power and fretdom than in any other country. Thies is shown by the laws and by deot- sions of the courts no less than by the meek and humble demeanor of the aver- age English girl compared with her American sister. In many cases the anti- woman sentiment Ie carried to absurd lengths. Henry Cavendish, the famous chemist, had such inveterate abhorrence of female soolety that from the precautions be took to avoid personal contact with any roember of the sex, he earned for bimself the sobriquet of the ‘‘Woman Hater.’’ It is said that he used to carry on com munications with his housekeeper en- tirely by correspondence, and a rigid rule was enacted in his establishment that on no pretense whatever might a female venture into his presence. A gentleman died recently in Vienna who used to adopt extraordinary mea- sures to avoid contact with woman- kind. At the theater it was his practice te book three seats and occupy the mid- dle one, so that a female should not by any possibility sit next to him. When traveling he would engage an entire compartment in order t avoid the risk of having a woman in the car- tiage, and he invariably chose the road in walking for the reason that he was least likely to find a feinale there The man's batred of the sex was indeed car ried so far that in his mortal sickness he gave orders for the purchase of six feet of ground on either side of his grave in order that in death a female body should not come within that distance of his. A man now living in a London suburb has a similarly pronounced hatred of the gentler sex. Being wealthy, he keeps up a large staff of servants, but no fe- male is to be found among ethem. Men and boys have to do ail the domestic affaires of the household, even to ssrub- bing the floors and making the beds. Women (evan the relatives of the serv ants) are strictly ferbidden the place, and any menial trangressing the rule by admitting a person in petticoats is in- stantly dismissed. One opulent gentleman in the north of England, who for years shut himself eat from female society, died not long since, leaVing a will the terms of which dis played In an unmistakable manner his hatred of womankind. Iynoring the fe males entirely, all his male relatives were provided with legacies, but on this condition, viz., that the single ones were to forfeit their inheritance the moment they married, and the married ones were not to come into theirs while their wives were living. An American gir! who saw the Czarina in Scotland writes to the Boston Tran- script that the royal lady was evidently frightened at the crowds surrounding her, but had firmness enough to “let a smile treeze upon her sweet, thoughtful lips.” This description would not bear analysis, but it conveya a comprehensible idea with great clearness. Tho Zulu Bible is one of the interest- ing forms of the Scriptures among the vast number of Bibles printed in the Bible House in New York, by the American Bible Society. The statistics of the scciety are interesting and sur- prising to any one unfamiliar with them. The society’s twenty-cent Bible and five-cent Testament are probably the cheapest books in the world. The Testa- ment for five cents is marvelous. It ts a small book, but the type is clear and lain, and the cover, a soft one of cloth, s neat and attractive. The figures on the inside of the 1806 edition show that 12,- 443,000 copies of the book have been printed. The Bible is in the 1895 edition, and the figures show that at the time of its issue 2,300,000 had been prirted. That number has now been largely in- creased, It has been estimated that in busy times an average of one Bible, and three or four Testaments are turned out every minute by the plant in the house for every day in the year. Abvout two- thirds of all the Bibles printed are given away, and the others are sold at cost Last year the society issued 1,750,285 Bibles and ‘Testaments. The English editions and editions in the common European languages are all printed at the Bible House, Some of the languages of the extreme East, like the Chinese, can be printed more cheaply by native workmen in the country to which they belong. The Canton Bibte, which is in the colloquial tongue spoken by most of the Chinese in this vicinity, is printed at the Bible House. In the past eighty yeurs of its existence, the society has issued 61,705,841 volumes of the Haly Scriptures, in nearly 100 languages and dislecta. In the first twenty-Sve years of its existence tt printed nearly 8,000,000 Hooks, In the second nearly 19,000,000, and the total jasae of the third twenty- five years was 52,448,136.
