rity TH Lecture at New Glasgow. iii \ very interesting and instructive lecture was delivered in the Hall here on Friday, the 22nd inst., under the auspices of the Farmers’ Club of New Glasgow, by George Smith, Esq., a well known resident of the village. The subject of the lecture was ‘‘Prince Edward Island 56 years ago. Che Hall was filled te overflowing with an intelligent audience The lecture was re- plete with stirring anecdotes and lively na tive wit, which drew from audience roars of laughter and thunders of applause. The lecturer described the coming of his family to the Island from England, years ago, giving a vivid description of his reception here. He drew a diagram of the fireplace in the principal inn, and gave an account of the breakfast, which consisted at thie 56 mainly of ** burgoo”’ stirabout or porridge. | to. He entered minutely into a description of Charlottetown as it was then, pointing out on a map he had drawn up, the principal houses, ete., and a mark which indicated a pine stump on Queen Square. He gave & description of the road from Charlottetown to New Gissgow, and the dwellings there- on. He spoke of the hardships the early settlers had to endure, saying that he re- membered his mother as having to carry a grist to the mill on her back, there being no proper road. He exhibited im muini- ature the vehicles, that were used in those d The first was a rough box on rude runners without shoeing, into which the farmer yoked his ox and drove to Charlottetown to get his supplies. The next was a later invention wheels which were from a log about 18 inches in diameter. [here being fora long time only one of these in the settle- ment, it was loaned around to the farmers who wished to make a trip to the city. It consumed, however, more grease than could be obtained in the settlement, and le ] ays. Oia sawed everybody kuew when the absent one was returning by the screeching of the borrow ed carriage, which could be heard at a dis- tance of about two miles. The lecturer concluded by reciting a poem which he himself had composed many years ago, | + about an home at the dead of night from a the home of one of New Glasgow 8 fair | to maidens, and which frivals Tam O'Shanter for vivid description and dramatic power. Troubles are brooded over that never come, or, if they come, are not half as bad as was im- acined. Few are content to live day by day and hour by hour, taking things as they are sent. A different course, however, is foolish as well as wrong! ‘* Daily bread” is what we need. Would we not count him a fool who would eat and drink for to-mor- row? Who dresses for to-morrow?
