So the women’s, and men’s team won on Sunday, wicked-good. - _ The girls seemed very comfort- able around the ball, and confident in their attacks against UNB. They played hard defense, and were victim to some off calls. This was noted by the lady panthers head coach, who was losing her head at one point in the game. She accused the ref of not calling an intentional foul, and then went on to say that he had better start if he didn’t want to cause injury - she was livid. Walters had a very strong game, winning rebounds, and fighting her way to the basket on several occasions. Andrews, and Campbell lead the quick attacks, and Natasha Eadie, was eating up the passing lanes in the opposing teams end. The girls played great, and it seemed as though they were confident through out the whole game. It showed when some UPEI faces lit up with smiles, as faces should when play- ing a sport you love. Lindsey Coade had an excellent defensive game, and Mary ‘Catherine Connolly had some nice shots from out near three point land. This game got messy at one point with high tenacity, elbows, and an attempt from a UNB player to strip the ball that looked more like attempted assault than any sport I know, Shhsssh, easy tiger! Final Score: UPEI 59 - UNB 51 . The guys game against MUN was a spectacle to watch. It had every thing: Big Dunks, nice D, huge blocks, or spikes I should say. Good boards, fast pace, crazy threes, and plays that make ya wheeze, cause ya can’t believe that it can be. Oh did I forget to mention that the whole gym sang Council Update PRESIDENT: talked about freeze tuition cam- paign. Although we were lacking in turnout from students and overwhelming apathy from the student body, we were able to accomplish our goals. For four days last week our plight was a focus of the media. We managed to catch the Minister of Education both of guard and unprepared as she demonstrated that her knowledge of our plight was rather limit- ed. Our requests were also answered over last week and many doors opened, one of © which will be a presentation to the stand- ing committee on Education. Brandon addressed the fact that most of his time has been spent preparing for the most recent Board of Governors Executive. VP FINANCE brought to the attention of coun- cil that applications for all position on next year's student council are available. The deadline is March Sth at 4:00 pm. ~ noted that he will need four vol- unteers, one to work on the Student Union Handbook Committee and three to work on the Student Union Health Plan Committee. EXEC VP thanked everyone that helped out with the Freeze Tuition Campaign. He Stated that we received a letter from the Minister thanking us for our time and stat- . ing that "[she] wasn't expecting [us]." On the 11th of this month had the Budget Committee Meeting that we requested and the Honorable Mildred Dover admits that she will stand up when the house is in session and state that stu- dent debt is a concern of the provincial government. Faculty of the year is coming up and a committee made up of members from each of the departments needs to be formed. BOARD OF GOVERNORS A tentative contract between the Faculty Association and the Board of Governors was presented which included _ upwards of a 15% increase in salary that will come into play by June 2005. The issue of workload was divid- ed into departments and will be phased in - over a two year period and the issue of intellectual property has been solved. All of this means a budget increase of % mil- lion which translates into a possible 4%- 8% rise in tuition. f MAPUS MAPUS has had two meetings the national anthem. It was crazy, the sound system cut out in the middle, so the whole gym just started singing. I have never expe- rienced something so patriotic (sniff, sniff). Now you may be thinking cheese, cheese, but I was glad to be a part of it, even if it was like something out of a PG movie. So back to the court, the game started with a burst of intensity from UPEI, a masked bandit ran into the gym, and shot 4 3-pointers, before anybody knew what was going on! Keirstead ya big dummy, don’t ya think you could of let them into the game just a little. Yes it was sweetness, and the game just steamed rolled from there. UPEI never looked back once, they were all so into this game. Reading plays was coming so easy to these guys, you could tell they were lovin it. The sounds from the court were halarious, jibs were being dished out, and taken. I know why since the last meeting of student council. Their financial situation has been one of the main topics that were discussed as they deal with their lack of funds until a new contract is formed. MAPUS also attempted activates such as attending a hockey game but tick- ets were sold out. Elections for MAPUS are coming up. GSA The GSA is in the middle of try- ing to form a separate graduation student ~ union. A grad student caucus is to be held in the near future at which delegates will be sent to and this issue will be discussed. There has been a show of support from members of GSA and the Associate Dean at AVC. Brandon also noted his support at this issue and offered any expertise that the Student Council could offer. BUSINESS Mark Hemphill Bus Prof approached Denis with the idea of a web log for business students and wants him to prepare entries and things of interest to bus students. He and Prof Hemphill will be meeting after break for more discus- sion. SCIENCE The biology vs. business pub crawl that was held last Friday was a suc- cess and there were close to around 200 people who showed up. The biology society is also put- ting together a winter camping trip and there is a biology conference that is to be held March 6th at UCCB. Five or six peo- ple will be doing presentations at this con-_ front row seat s at the big games are so popular. The panthers coasted easily to the first half. The second half was more of the same, MUN didn’t have a chance, UPEI, was playing amazing D, they couldn't get close to the basket. This probably gave way for MUN’s Colin Power to have an impres- sive night hitting threes, he was accurate and definitely had his 50% for sure. Tyler Wood had a sweet game with one really sweet steal under the basket- awesome. Doug, Sherone, and Kenny owned the key on both sides of the court, and also all had sweet jams, am I saying sweet enough? Sweet. I can’t say anything else, sweetness overload. Oh, the score? Final Score: UPEI 88 - MUN 71 ference and from UPEI, 2 presentations me and 1 poster will be entered in the confer- ence. | VET MED The fundraising auction for stu- dents to attend the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) symposium held on January 28th in Tennessee was a success. 41 Students attended the Student Canadian Veterinary Medical Association sympoium at Guelph.
