This is Oddfellowship. A. D. M. \Charlottetown, Pk 2 | elie iesavel | Mathered Gems From Many Sources. The most difficult thing in our Order is to live up to its teachings. It is not what Oddfellows “think or say, But what they do, that will have its effect Not every mau who carries the symbol is an Oddfellow, but he who dveth the wofk of the Order. _ Less of the boomers and more of the workers should be the object and aim of the subordinate lodges. The gavel in the hands of the Noble Grand is the emblem eof authority, and should always be obeyed. Candour, kindness, forbearance, hoping ’ wi 1 ne _Oddfeliowship is one of the finest frnits of Christian civilization and the staunchest bulwark of order and virtue. We should all rejoice in being part and parcel of au organization that has such a splendid record for doing good in the world. He who loves the Order for its pure tenets and its capacity to unite good men fur a good purpose is entitled to the name ————— SSS Jot Oddfetiow. : The Grand Lodge of Texas recently de- cided to sell the Oddfellows’ Orphans’ a Home, as there is no present demand for it. Fortunate Oddfellows, Oddfellowship as a mural institution ,{demands a belief in a Supreme Being, and enjoins upon every momber a due regard fer all that tends to a moral manhood. Oddiellowship undoubtedly contains « larger percentage of men who oarn their hving by regular daily duties, paid for by wages or salary, thau any other order in ex- istence, Nearly all of the country lodges have gone to work to swell the membership, and from appearances it looks as if this year will be one of the most successful for many rs. A gavel made out of wood from the “Charter Oak” that grew at Hartford, Conn., has been presented to Grand Sire ee Grand Rep. Ralph Burnham, of that jurisdiction. ~ Every applicant who desires to join the order should come tv its offices unbiassed by friends and uninfluenced by mercenery motives, and offer himself a candidate freely and voluntarily. “When staff-work degenerates into mere dramatic parades and spectacles—leaving Se . the practical work of the Order, such as Sekine the sick, to take care of itself— then it is time to dispense with staff work. a Lt.-Gen. Underwood was tendered a ftoyal reception on February 18th, on his last visit to Minneapolis, There were over 200 chevaliers in full uniform and about 1,G00 persons in attendance. There was a battalion drill, etc. _ Mirriam Lodgs No. O6 was instituted at yt: Stephen, N. B jon the 26th inst. by jnPast Grand Representative Samuel Watts, Collector of Customs. The new t v4 OLodge starts off with just one hundred members. The work of conferring degress was efficiently performed by Fellowship Lodge No. 97, Sslais, Me. About 10 302 \supper was served in the oe Vestry to the members of the new ge by the ladies of that church. Remember the Independent Order of Odd fellows requires its members to be physically ag well as morally sound. A man may possess an excellent character, but if he is not up to the standard physically he should be rejected. We find the following in an exchange: **Love those who humble and contradict you, for they are more useful to your perfection than those who fistter you.” And never be- fore did we know what had so imperceptibly led us on to the graceful perfection we now enjoy and rubbed the wrinkles from our furrowed brow, blessed us with the beams of cheerfullness and the elasticity of youth. The following are the decrees granted on Thursday last by His Lordship Mr. Justice Young in the above case. rick Higgins and his wife died from the effecta-of expusure on their way from town to their home at West Royalty in December last. They were childless, but had adopted a girl named Eliza Lawlor nine or ten years ago. Mr. Higgins willed his property in favor of this girl, who is now fourteen years of age; and his heirs sought to set aside the will, calling for proof in sulemn form. Mr. A. A. McLean, with Mr. Mellish appeared for the executors; Mr. F. L. Haszard for the beneficiary, and Mr. Hodgson, Q C., and Mr. M. McLeod, Q. C., in oppos- ition: In Progatre Court, 54th Vic., A. D. 1891. In re Estate of late Patrick Higgins, de- ceased, testate. Judges’ Decree,—Having carefully read the voluminous evidence produced in this by the advocates on both sides; and duly censidered the strong and corresponding teatimony contirmatively given by the Rev. Mr. McElmeel, the spiritual adviser of the testator, by Dr. Stephen Jenkins, his med- ical attendant, and by Mr. Arthur Reddin, the three subscribing witnesses to the will of said testator, and also by Mr. Mellish, his legal adviser, and by Dr. Conroy, being his two executors:—J can come to no other conclusion than that at the time when the said testator executed hia will he was of svund disposing mind and memory, and, therefore, that the said will has been sub- stantially proved before me in solemn form, I do, therefore, hereby decreed that the will of the said Patrick Higgins, de- ceased, the said Testator hath been, legally executed, and is hereby sustained as the last will and testament of the said Patrick Higgins, deceased; and that the probate thereof, or letters testamentary granted by me to the said executors therein named, confirmed with costs out of the said Estate. Cuaries Youna, X Judge of Probate. ~ March 26, 1891. to oosts,——From the evidence given by witnesses in opposition to the said will there appears quite sufficient to show me that the heirs of the testator thought they had probable ground to question the capa- city and memory of the said testator when he executed his will, and as they did not take proceedings to set aside the wil] vexa- tiously, and for undue litigation, but for justice to themselves, as they hoped, I, fore, further decree that the taxed costs of the oppoeiig party be"paid out of the Estate of the said deceased. Among the Jews the rule was fora maid- en to marry on the fourth, and a widow on the fifth day of the week—not earlier. In Jewish marriages the woiman is set on the right, but throughout Christiandom her place in the ceremony is on the left, In a Roman marriage the bride was pur- chased by the bridegroom’s payment of three pieces of copper money to her parents, The Russians have « story of a widow who was so inconsolable for the loss of her husband that she tovk another to keep her from fretting herself to death. The custom of putting a veil upon the maid before the betrethal was done to con- ceal her blushes at the firat touch of the man’s hand, and at the closing kiss. Kissing the bride the moment the mar- riage ceremonial ended, though not now prescribed by the rubric of the Western Churches, formerly was regarded as an im- perative act on the part of the bridegroom. -_——~- < Martini-Henrt Amucnition.—An Ottawa despatch says it is in contemplation to manu- facture Martini-Henri ammunition at the government cartridge factory at Quebec this year. ilies Tue Srrincsitt.
