Beatty of Halifax. lost his life when the boat swamped. 31;, Beatty and Mr. Robert Quinn had left the Nova Scotia .-apjtal on Friday night for the Lake Charlotte area for a weekend it iishing. Saturday afternoon four friends at the two men drove to the lake with them and then driving them back to Halifax. The four were John Boyce. Dartmouth. Colin F. Boyd. Miss Rita Lafford and Miss Jollnson. all of Halifax. arrived at Eheir destination around 4.00 p.m.. Benny then began a ferry service in transport his friends to the camp which was half a mile across the lake. on his first trip he took the Johnson girl across to the camp and then returned for the other girl He loaded his ten-foot boat, winch was equipped with an out- board motor. with a quantity of equipment and also made room for the second girl. Upon arrival at the camp it was decided that all would return to the city for their meal. The victim. reputed to be I strong swimmer, went below the surface and did not appear again. The Lalford girl clung to the over- turned boat and called for help. The two men. Boyce and Boyd. who accompanied the girls to the lake, were sitting in the car await- ing the return of Beatty and the boat. After sonle time elapsed the two left the car and went to the shore. Upon arrival they noticed the girl in the water clinging to the boat. Boyce immediately strip- of his outer garments an plunged into the water to save the girl. Boyd went for help. Boyce managed to get to the girl and bring her to shore after which they went to the house of a near-by resident. The body of Mr. Beatty' was recovered at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday night by the Sheet Har- bor detachment of the RCMP who conducted dragging operations in the lake. He is survived by his wife and one daughter. Mr. John Boyce, whose quick and courage- ous action, in the frigid waters. saved the life of Miss Lafford, is ' well known in Prince Edward isl- and and especially in Georgetown. where he resided for ten years with his parents.
