But, she dreamed not that below, Steadily oozing there, A cracked egg lay, which, drop by drop, Slow sapped that sabric fair. De Brown passed on the other side, His face turned toward the wall; And she ? Ah, well—the moral’s plain— Pride goes before a fall ! -<_ +o -—— — Social Courtesy. “All the theories of social courtesy io Germany, so far xs I have known, imply deference as due to the map, not the woman. A young physician lately from Berlin was telling me, the other day, that at his boarding-house there, soon after arrival, he stepped aside to give precedence to a lady who, like himself, was entering the dining-room. She begged him to precede ber, and when he declined, she sideled reluctantly in, keeping her face always deferentially turned toward him, as toward a crown- ed head. This happened twoor three times, until she at last remoostrated with him pointing out that nobody else did as he did, and that it made it awk- ward for her. After this, observing that every other manin the family made Lis way intothe dining-room and left the ladies to follow as they could, he found it easier todo the same, and so adopted the common practice. ——- ee A Way to Grow Wise. After reading a book or an article or an item of infermation from any re- liable source, before turning your at- tention to other things, give two or three minutes quiet thought to the sub- ject that has just been presented to your mind; see how much you can remember concerning it; and if there were any new ideas, instructive facts, or points of especial interest that impressed you as you read, force yourself to recall them. lt may be a little troublesome at first until your mind gets under control and, learns to obey your will, but the very effort to think it allout will engrave the facts deeply upon the memory, so deeply that they will not be effaced by the rushiog in of anew and different set of ideas; whereas, ifthe matter be given no further consideration at all, the impressions you received will fade away so entirely that within a few weeks, you will be totally unable to re- member more than a dim outline of them. Oe Hints About Picnics. The most important part of a pic- nic, however, is not the weather or the place or the dinner. You may choose the most beautiful spot in the world, and spread the most delicious lunch ever prepared, and yethave the whole thing a complete failure, simply because the company was not well selected. Out-of doors, where people are free from formality, unless they are congenial friends, and what Mrs. Whitney calls “Real Folks,” they will be likely to feel ill at ease, and miss the support given by company clothes and manners. Small picoies for this reason among others are usually much pleasanter than large picnics. In making up the party, be sure to leave behind the girl who is certain to be too warm or too cold, or to think some Other place better than the one where she is, and who has “a horrid time” if she has to submit to any personal juconvenience for the sake of others ; and with her, the boy whe loves to tease, and who is quite sure that his way is the only good. way. Put into their places some others, young or old, who love simple pleasures, and are ready to help others to enjoy them. Next in importance to the company is the place. It must not be ata great distance, or you will all be tired, not to say cross, when you arrive there. It must be reasonably shady, and not too fartroma supply of good drinking water. Ifthe company are to walk, you must be especially careful not to be overburdened with baskets and wraps, for the bundles which seemed so light when you started are sure to weigh down much more heavily before you reach your destination. Be careful to have this work fsirly distributed. Never start until you are sure that you know just where you are going, andibe best way of getting there. W andering about to chose a place, aod thinking constantly to find one more desirable, is very fatiguing, The matter should be settled beforehand by two or three of the party, and the others should £0 stright to the spot, and make the bestof it. If any do not like it, they can chose a different placo when their turn comes to make the selection. —St. Special Notices, —— Nrw Goods now opening at J, B.
