an Italian railroad ofllclal while he

Star steamer Teutonic, which' sailed
today for New York. Gloletto, is
charged with the robbery of $93,200
by breaking in a glass window in
the cailroad stallon at Chlasso, a
town of Switzerland ou"the Italian
frontier, Gold to the amount of
about $30,800 was found` in the l.jqan's
valises, and $14,800 in ` bank notes
were discovered wrapped about his
body. He was accompanied by a
young Italian woman with whom it
is alleged he was eloplng to the

BOSTON, April 2-Another cut in
the price of illuminating oil deliver-
ed to consumers from oil-tank wagons
was made by the New England Oil
Company yesterday, and was im-|
mediately met by the Standard Oil'
Company today. The reduction is a
cent on a gallon which will amount-
to a loss of revenue of about a mii-
llon dollars a year ln the Boston dis-
trict. The price two months ago was.
nine cents a gallon, but war was ini-|
tiated by the New England Oil Colm-|

price to seven cents.

LONDON, April 2‘~The British
Government issued a notice recently
that foreign seamen should not be
engaged on British ships in European
waters, unless they have enough
knowledge of English to understand
orders given in that language. It is
stated that it is no uncommon thing
to finds shlp’s crew composed of
eight for nine nationalities, with
absolutely no language in common,
and perhaps a boatswalu who only
understands English an an “inter-
preter_"
The return relating to British sea-
men 'employed in the British mer-
cantile marine shows 30 English and
Irish per 10,000, while Scotland sup-
plies 56 and Wales 44 per 10,000.
The proportion of Lascsrs and for-
eigners increases, while the British
decrease. In the last iifteen‘years,
1891-1£T06', there was an increase of
17,108 Lascars, (East India. sailors)
and 11,022 foreigners, and of British
only 510. The recent order as to
understanding the English language
in European waters, it is supposed
will cause a decline in Lascars and
foreigners.
