Door} to Mercnarts, k, uae TT eS SO What Is Dr. Chase's Nerve | | bless the farm. - Apply to ; T CAMPBELL =: ee THE FARMER'S BOYS. “A Farm,” says Drummond, “‘is not a place for raising crops merely, but for the making of men.” Did you, brother farmer, ever reflect on this matter? Is your tarm devoted merely tothe accumulation of money? Are ycu making a home as well as a farm? Are you as anxious that your boys and girls develop to the best advantages as you are that your colts and pigs and heifers shall be of the best? If you are doing the one and leaving the other undone, are you, as a_ good citizen doing your duty by the boys and girls? It is not sufficient that ihe; be well fed and decently and comfor:ably cloth.d. They have minds _ that should be cultivated if they ar2 to grow up to be the best citizens and to ap! reciat: the advantage: th , have in this great country. You may train their hands and develop their bodies, but if you dwarf their minds by de- priving them of the mental food they require, you are preparing them for drudges and not for real manhood. No matter if you had poor opportunities for an education; it is. all the more reason why you should see that your children have better chances. It is the educated man nowadays that is the leader in the world’s work, especially those whose education takes in the whole man. Andrew Carnegie once said in a public speech, “the world is ever on the hunt for educated brains with trained hands.” You may succeed in keeping the boys on the farm __per- haps by teaching them nothing but toil, but the chances are that they will so tire of this that they will break away from the farm at the first opportunity, and go out into the world to try their untrained hands at something else. Far better give them the education the times call for, an education that goes beyond tne old time curriculum and takes in the hands as well as the brain- Then, if the boy has a happy home on: the farm, and has a real liking for. farming, he will be in a shape to maké afar better farmer. But if his tastes lead in an other direction, give him | the training needed and let him take , the life for which he is best fitted. The old notion that the boys raised on the farm should always stay on the farm is simply preposterous. ‘The country depends in all its industries on the new blood that the farm can supply better than any other place where boys are raised, and every boy should have the opportunity given him to find out where his life work should be. ‘The ones thatare to be the farmers of the future may for a time drift away, but they will inevit ably return in the end with new ideas and improved business methods Now is the time to select the places where your boys and girls are to be educated for life’s work. And fortunately there are in every State colleges of agriculture and me- chanic arts where the national and state governments have united in thé founding of schools where the training of the hand goes along with the educating of the mental faculties, and there are also schools of similar character for the girls, where the domestic sciences are taught, and where the future mothers of the country are trained as their mothers had no chance to:be. Instead then of investing so much in land and beasts, invest some of your money in the educating of your children. There is no investment that will pay you half so well. Remarks :—-That is all very good; looks wellon paper and would sound well out in a grove at a grange picnic; but the advice and instruction given out at random should be be calculated for the many rather than for the favored few. The average farmer of the coun- try atthe present time must do some pretty lively scratching and make long days if he and his boys raise enough to keep up the farm and building and pay all expenses and send one boy to college. It is all very well to give the young people as good a start as is con- sistent with the needs and condition of the family, but the parents should be considered first and ,if all is true what we are told, young people should be as well prepared to start empty handed as their parents were. Then, when a man has decided that he will send a boy to college and fill his head with something beside “the old-time curri- culum,” what is he to du when he finds that the agricultural and mechanical college which was established for the benefit of those who want to fit them- selves for useful positions in life, has been switched offit proper track and is dealing out doses of the same old kind? The American farmer knows the value of education, makes better use of what he has and is more ready to help his children than many of those who think) their mission in life is ended when they have uttered something that re- flects on the habits of intelligence of to thefarmers. If people$who have any- thing to say that is worth saying would fe SS a ee teutitvtt oni.
