Trinity bells with their hollow lungs, their vibrant lips and their tongues, Over the roots of the city pour | Their Easter music with joyous roar, rill the soaring notes to the sun are rolled, Aa he swings along in his path ofgold. ' | } And brazen | ‘‘Dearest papa,” says my boy to me, As he merrily climbs on his mother’s knee, ‘Why are these eggs that you see me hold Covered so finely with blue and xold ? And whatis the wonderful bird that lays Such beautiful eggs on Easter days?” “You have heard, my boy, of the maa who died, Crowned with keen thorns and crucified: And how Joseph the wealthy—whom God re- ward— Cared for the corpse of the martyred Lord, And piously tombed it within the rock, And closed the gate with a mighty block. **Now, close by the tomb a fair tree grew, With pendulous leaves and blossoms of blue; And deep in the green tree’s shadowy breast A beautiful singing-bird sat on her neat, Which was bordered with mosses like mela- chite, And held four eggs of an ivory white. “Now when the bird from her dim recess Beheld the Lord in His burial dress, And looked on the heavenly face so pale, And the dear feet pierced with the cruel nail, Her heart nigh broke with a sudden pang, And outofthe depths of her sorrow she sang. “All night long till the moon is up, She sat and sang in her moss-wreathed cup,— A song ofsorrow as wild and shrill As the homeless wind when it roams hill— So full of fears, so loud and long, That the griet of the world seemed turned to song. the ‘But soon there came through the weeping night A glimmering angel clothed in white ; And he rolled the stone from the tom) away, Where the Lord of the earth and heaven lay ; And Christ arose in the cavern’s gloom, And in living lustre came from the tomb, ‘‘Now the bird thatin the heart of the tree Beheld the Celestial mystery . Ard its heart was filled with sweet delight— And it poured a song on the throbbing night; Notes climbed on notes, higher, higher, They shot to heaven like spears of fire. “When the glittering, white-robei angel heard The sorrowing song of the grieving bird, And heard the following chant of mirth, That hailed Christ risen again on earth, He said, ‘Sweet bird, be forever blest— Thyself, thy eggs, and thy moss-wreathed nest ?’ “And ever, my child, since that blessed night When death bowed down the Lord of Light The eggs of that sweet bird change their hue, And burn with red and gold and blue ; Reminding mankind, in their simple way, Of the holy marvel of Easter Day.”’ —Fiiz-James O Brien —_—————_—______- <p pe —e--—_ Young Ladies’ School Dresses. It is too often the practice at school examinations to array young school girls in costly fabrics, fitted with all the dressmakers’ art and skill. Besides distractiog the pupil’s mind from the studies for weeks and months before commencement day and filling it with speculations upon the fascinations of dress, these “dress parades,” are an obvious injustice to the young ladies whose. parents cannot afford such exp ios It very naturally morti- fies and humiliates them, and, in many instances, leads the sensitive girl to leave the school rather than endnre the disagreeable contrast. Parents, whether rich or poor, if they are sen- sible and intelligent, would much prefer to have their daughters’ minds free trom the distracting thoughts of dress while pursuing their studies; and a brilliant examination showing the re- sources ofa bright and active mind will array a young lady in more beauty and grace than the most expensive gown. if the mental achievements of the young lady are exceptionally _ bril- liant, the dress she is arrayed in will attract no attention. On the other hand, if her mind is sluggish or dormant, a gorgeous gown will only serve to emphasize the defect by singl- iug the young lady out asa person pe= culiarly obtuse. Costly dress on such occasious, therefore, is either an unnecessary expense or a _ posi- . . ‘Tt 2 tive misfortune. The bright and brilliant young lady will not require it. The pupil whose mind is dull, or who, permitting her faculties to be consumed with thoughts of dress, has neglected her studies, will find that her intellectual defects are all the more! conspicuous from the showy apparel | whic: gives her prominence and dis ion. She saysto the public “You must admire my gown, for my mind is| not very attractive and will not sustain | a verp critical examination.” Whereas, had the young lady given the time to her studies that she devoted to dreams of gorgeous apparel, she might have achieved an intellectual triumph, at once an honor to herself and a credit to her seminary. ae Too Many of Him.
