What is now happening in Cape Colony, and Natal happened long ago in Upper and Lower Canada- thcse provinces were invaded by au armed enemy. The two provinces had then a less population than Nova Scotia has now. Upper Canada. had only 95,000, p<~opl~_». and Lower Can ata 353,000, the latter nearlj' all French. The United States with which we were at war, had a popula- tion of 8,000,000, or nearly twenty times asmany as Canada. The war broke out in 1812, when Napoleon was in the zenith of his power and L. continued till 1814. before the con-§ queror of Europe was crushed at \\Isterl"»o. Britain had much else to do besides defending Canada in those days, but sent what forces she c-;uid spare. 'lhe Canadian militiamen English and French, rallied to the defence of th' ir homes, and before the war end- ed no foot of Canadian soil was held by the enemy, and the Anglo-Canad- ian armies were in possession of vari- ous posts in New York, Vermont and Michigan states. 'lhe battlefields were mainly near the border in one country or the other. It may be worth while to refresh the memories of our youth- ful raaiers with a few dates pertain- ing to the only time within the century past that Canada has been seriously invaded.
