Some think the reason is that the great innominate artery carries more blood to the right side, and rour- ishes it more. One philosopher thinks it is due to the fact that the right side of heavier, owing to the situation of the liver, But the most likely of all explana- tions is that of Mr. Herbert Spencer. He says that uncivilized men very early found out that they were more yulner- able on the left side than on the right. With their left hand, therefore, they held the shield that protected the heart, and with their right wielded the spear and club. Overcoats size BZ to 27 we OTHER LINES | THE MOST USEFUL METAL. | It is said that a ton of steel will make 1,500,000 pens. Steel rails were first used for railways at Chalk Farm, near London, in 1862. Occasional instances have been found of perfectly pure native iron in meteorites. A large part of the finest iron and steel of commerce is made from maguetic ores. A chemical authority states that silicon, as well as carbon, renders iron more fusible. The hot blast nace use some time between 1838. Mulhall says the United States pro- duces one-third of the steel manufactured in the world. The iron deposited by the galyanic bat- tery is grayish white and takes a beauti- ful polish. Ships built of steel are said to be able tocarry 20 per cent more freight than those of iron. In the fourteenth century Belgium was the principal seat of the iron manufac- tures of Europe. It is said that the first cannon cast in the United States was made at Hagers- town, Md. The iron pyrites, or ‘‘fool’s gold,” abundant in many parts of the world. is a bisulphide of iron. Rust consists of ferric oxide, ferrous oxide, ferrous carbonate, calcic carbonate, silica and ammonia. The common copperas of commerce, so | extensively used as a disinfectant, isa salt of iron, the sulphate. Itis said by geologists that iron in mar- ketable quantities has been found in every country on the globe, The first successful furnace for smelting iron ore with anthracite coal was builtin Pennsylvania in 1838. Swedish iron has a wide reputation in the arts. The best, it is said, is obtained from the mine of Dannemora. The so-called “tinwares” used by tin- ners are merely sheets of iron rolled sf thin and plated with tin. Iron is not the only metal which can in welded, but no metal possesses this prop- erty in so set a degree. In oxygen gas, a piece of heated iron wire burns with remarkable brilliancy throwing off intensely bright sparks. It is said by an historical authority that the average life of an iron rail is 16 years; that of a steel one, 40 years. Many doctors believe that iron, medieal- ly considered, is a sort of food and is given with best effect at meal times. The tonnage of the iron and steel ships built in the United States was greatest in 1801, when it was 105,618 tons. Some archaeologists declare that the first use made of iron by the human race was in the manufacture cf weapons. According to Moses, the first iron- worker was Tubal-Cain, who was “an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron.” Besides the steel factories in the United was introduced into fur- 1832 and is It Ssates, there are fourteen in Birming- ham. three in France and two in Ger- many. Mr. Gray was familiar not only with the whale’s food, but observed its manner of feeding and the way in which it took its nap ‘‘after meals.-’ ‘‘No doubt,’’ he wrote, ‘‘whales are very particular in the quality of their food, for they are never to be found feeding whsre the water is dirty, but almost invariably in clean, clear, dark-blue or light olive-green water. The usual way in which a whale feeds is to chovose a spot where the food is plentiful and swim backward aad forward for 200 or 3800 yards, with tho nose just under water. They invariably swim from one side of the beat back again to where they started from with their mouths cpen. They then close their jaws and swatlow the food caught. “They will go on in this way feeding for an hour or more; after this they will disappear under the nearest ice and sleep there until they come out for exercise or for another meal, Unlike other warm- blooled animals, they do not require to breathe through the nostrils while asleep and they de not do so. Whales can sleep as well under water as they do upon the surface, as I have often seen them disap- pear under solid ice and remain there for many hours at atime. Sometimes they fall asleep with their heads down and only their tails standing out of the water.’’— ihe Spectator, HK. J. Lisle, repr @ Bros., sx.
